Karen Bass (D-CA) at 23%, a statistical dead heat given the poll\u2019s 2.5% margin of error.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-04-11\/karen-bass-rick-caruso-in-dead-heat-mayoral-poll\">reported<\/a> Monday:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If the primary were today, Caruso, with backing from 24% of likely voters, and Bass, with 23%, would move to the November runoff, according to a new <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.igs.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies<\/a> poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The poll, taken from March 29 to Tuesday, marks a major shift in the campaign. Bass held a wide lead over Caruso in February, when the<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-02-17\/2022-la-mayoral-election-race-karen-bass-takes-lead-poll-finds\">previous Berkeley IGS poll for The Times<\/a> was conducted. Caruso, who had just entered the race, stood at 8% in that poll. Since then, his support has tripled while Bass has lost ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Caruso\u2019s ascent results in no small part from <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-04-07\/caruso-has-now-loaned-his-campaign-10-million\">nearly $9 million he has spent<\/a> on television and digital advertising since February. Bass has not yet begun airing television ads.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If one of the candidates wins 50% in the June primary, they will become mayor \u2014 otherwise there will be a November runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Caruso, a Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat, is best known for developing high-end shopping centers such as The Grove in Beverly Hills and the Palisades Village. He controversially banned boxing legend Manny Pacquiao<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0and then-candidate Donald Trump from his properties over their conservative political stances (he\u00a0relented after Trump won in 2016). Focusing on the homelessness issue, he has sent glossy ads to residents that convert conveniently into window signs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">Bass, the former head of the Congressional Black Caucus who was on the short list to be Joe Biden\u2019s running mate in 2020, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2020-election\/2020\/07\/31\/karen-basss-long-march-from-communist-fringe-to-bidens-vp-shortlist\/\">known<\/a> for having a soft spot for communist dictator Fidel Castro in Cuba, though she was also one of the few Democratic lawmakers speaking out against the mob\u00a0destruction of statues and memorials during the Black Lives Matter riots in 2020. She has had difficulty running a successful campaign, as she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/22\/report-democrat-karen-bass-l-a-mayoral-campaign-loses-another-top-staffer\/\">lost<\/a> several top staffers since entering the race last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">Outgoing mayor Eric Garcetti, who was re-elected by a wide margin in 2017, was tapped to serve as President Biden\u2019s ambassador to India, but his nomination has stalled amid questions about his indifference to sexual misconduct by a key aide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
