Version: 4.0.47--><div><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">The candidate for the establishment-right\u00a0R\u00e9publicains (Republicans) has urged voters to back the left-liberal Emmanuel Macron, not the national conservative Marine Le Pen, as exit polls indicate her own performance in the first round of France\u2019s presidential elections was a dismal failure.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie Pecresse, whose party is roughly equivalent to America\u2019s Republicans or Britain\u2019s Conservatives in terms of its former dominance of the French right electorally, may have collapsed to less than 5 per cent of the vote in the first round of the country\u2019s presidential elections \u2014 a historically poor result <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/video\/20220410-replay-french-presidential-election-conservative-candidate-pecresse-concession-speech\">described<\/a> as \u201ccatastrophic\u201d by French media.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The establishment rightist has urged her supporters to back not fellow conservative Marine Le Pen in the second round run-off vote, however, but President Macron, despite his being a government minister for the establishment left Socialist Party prior to his first run for the presidency in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Pecresse claimed in her <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/french-conservative-candidate-pecresse-says-182044773.html?guccounter=1&#038;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&#038;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACv676ORWb8vzxXd2wDW6rwBUX3-1ZkUfSVKYcVCIBSNubZbhPOp0O2y0Cj6KiDa8WzcemGRdDypJ1gnfkNpDEtI3pr5D9xKy7KUTGtbEXQZMfnT32NofZwwevlaxcRJ9KlwCvKoMNO_yn2cM1SY48nYC4LHprQ-6zmaBKacrE9j\">concession speech<\/a> that Le Pen\u2019s \u201chistorical proximity with Vladimir Putin discredits her from defending the interests of our country in these tragic times\u201d and that her \u201celection would mean that France would become irrelevant on the European and international scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that despite her supposedly \u201cstrong disagreement\u201d with Macron she would \u201cvote for him in order to stop Marine Le Pen.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">France, Ipsos-Steria projection (8:16 PM CEST):<\/p>\n<p>Presidential election (first round)<\/p>\n<p>Macron (EC-RE): 28.5% (+4.5)<br \/>Le Pen (RN-ID): 23.3% (+2.3)<br \/>M\u00e9lenchon (LFI-LEFT): 20.3% (+0.7)<br \/>Zemmour (REC-NI): 7.0% (new)<br \/>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>+\/- vs. 2017 result<\/p>\n<p>More: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kQiwojrtFg\">https:\/\/t.co\/kQiwojrtFg<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/presidentielles?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#presidentielles<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SBgFQpZNaf\">pic.twitter.com\/SBgFQpZNaf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Europe Elects (@EuropeElects) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuropeElects\/status\/1513222535567061003?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marine Le Pen appears to have slightly increased her share of the vote in this year\u2019s first round compared to 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Far-left candidate Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon came in third place with around a fifth of the vote, similar to his 2017 performance, while the Socialist Party for which Macron was once a minister \u2014 and which held the presidency until 2017 \u2014 has collapsed to around two per cent from an already abysmal 6.4 per cent in the previous election.<\/p>\n<p>The disintegration of both the French Republicans and the Socialist Party represents a sea-change in the country\u2019s politics, which the supposedly rival parties both urging their former voter bases to coalesce around the supposedly \u201ccentrist\u201d Macron while the once-fringe, populist-leaning politics of Le Pen has risen to the status of mainstream opposition and, potentially, government.<\/p>\n<p>Le Pen\u2019s populist right-wing rival Eric Zemmour, who had captured many headlines over the course of the campaign, appears to have slightly underperformed compared to pre-election polling, with exit polls indicating he took around 7 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Second-round voting takes place on April 24th after what will no doubt be in a intense burst of head-to-head campaigning between Macron and Le Pen.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tonight&#8217;s French first-round result gives Macron some momentum ahead of second-round voting on April 24th.
