I was Teflon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, Lyonne landed a role in Tamara Jenkins\u2019s \u201cSlums of Beverly Hills.\u201d During the filming of the movie, the Netflix star ended up driving drunk and crashing her car into the window of a furniture store in Southern California.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In this week&#8217;s issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewYorker?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NewYorker<\/a>, I profiled the unstoppable, utterly quotable, obsessively curious actor, director, and quintessential New Yorker Natasha Lyonne. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UWhkuSYcCS\">https:\/\/t.co\/UWhkuSYcCS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 rachel syme (@rachsyme) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachsyme\/status\/1510980844617445383?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe jobs and drugs were doing this two-handed dance of pulling me away from an education,\u201d the actress explained. \u201cSlums of Beverly Hills\u201d made her one of Hollywood\u2019s most in-demand young stars, and the roles kept coming with \u201cDetroit Rock City\u201d in 1999 and a role of a sexually sophisticated sidekick in the gross-teen comedy \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d that same year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, Lyonne was arrested on a D.U.I. charge. The following year, she moved into a town house with actor Michael Rapaport. She said the place ended up being a party house with common drug use and she would later end up being evicted by Rapaport in 2004 after tenants called police, accusing her of \u00a0threatening a neighbor\u2019s dog and ripping a mirror off the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just decided to drop out completely,\u201d Lyonne shared. \u201cIt gets really dark. I sort of think I\u2019m done forever. And I\u2019m not coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a long time between snorting heroin to shooting it to sharing needles,\u201d she added. \u201cI took it to the finish line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May of 2005, Lyonne ended up dealing with a life-threatening health complication that landed her in the I.C.U. Because of it, she\u00a0missed several court dates for charges related to the neighbor incident. A warrant was later issued for her arrest. In December 2006, she turned herself in. Under court orders, the actress checked into a rehab center \u2014 and hasn\u2019t used drugs since.<\/p>\n<p>Natasha said she kept getting a few acting gigs, but it was nothing noteworthy until she landed the part on the hit series \u201cOrange Is the New Black,\u201d which premiered in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Lyonne said she grew up with a father who was an alcoholic and thinks now her struggles with sobriety was in part her way of dealing with her parents wild ways.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to describe them she said, \u201cthey were both into fast cars, fur coats, Rottweilers, cocaine, drinking.\u201d Natasha said she recalled just wanting to be \u201cinvisible the entire time\u201d when her \u201cparents were alive.\u201d Both died in the twenty-tens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that I\u2019m an adult, I think so much of my being a wild thing was because I was trying to get in their shoes,\u201dLyonne shared.\u00a0\u201cI fully cleaned house on that type of behavior.
