On March 9-15, months after the launch of a worldwide campaign to find the missing documents, the notebooks were safely returned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The notebooks \u2014 one of which contained the scientist\u2019s \u201cTree of Life\u201d sketch \u2014 came back to Cambridge University Libraries in plastic wrap along with the notebooks\u2019 archive box. There was also a note <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/stories\/TreeOfLife\"><span>printed<\/span><\/a><span> on the brown envelope that contained the items:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Librarian<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Happy Easter<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>X<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span>The package was found on the floor in a public area of the library \u2014 in a pink gift bag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy sense of relief at the notebooks\u2019 safe return is profound and almost impossible to adequately express. Along with so many others all across the world, I was heartbroken to learn of their loss and my joy at their return is immense,\u201d Cambridge University librarian Jessica Gardner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/charles-darwin-returned-notebooks-intl-scli-scn\/index.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement. \u201cThey may be tiny, just the size of postcards, but the notebooks\u2019 impact on the history of science, and their importance to our world-class collections here, cannot be overstated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In November 2020, Gardner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/stories\/DarwinAppeal\"><span>worked<\/span><\/a><span> with the Cambridgeshire Police and the International Criminal Police Organization to issue a \u201cpublic appeal\u201d for help with locating the documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe sole aim of our public appeal was to have the manuscripts safely returned to our safekeeping and I am delighted to have had such a successful outcome in such a relatively short space of time,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe notebooks can now retake their rightful place alongside the rest of the Darwin Archive at Cambridge, at the heart of the nation\u2019s cultural and scientific heritage, alongside the archives of Sir Isaac Newton and Professor Stephen Hawking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gardner added that Cambridge University will place the notebooks on public display during the summer \u2014 \u201cto give everyone the opportunity to see these remarkable notebooks in the flesh.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Born in 1809, Charles Darwin was a British naturalist best known for his books \u201cOn the Origin of Species\u201d and \u201cThe Descent of Man,\u201d which argue that all creatures \u2014 including humans \u2014 emerged from a common ancestor. His works set off global controversy that endure to the present day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite his undeniable influence on world history, Darwin has by no means been immune to cancel culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As racial activism spread from the United States to Europe, officials at the United Kingdom\u2019s Natural History Museum <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/uks-natural-history-museum-reviewing-charles-darwin-exhibits-for-offensive-content-colonialism\"><span>reviewed<\/span><\/a><span> exhibits on the biologist over concerns that his work is \u201coffensive\u201d and that his voyage to the Galapagos Islands was \u201ccolonialist\u201d in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Black Lives Matter movement has demonstrated that we need to do more and act faster, so as a first step we have commenced an institution-wide review on naming and recognition,\u201d museum director Michael Dixon explained to staff at the time. \u201cWe want to learn and educate ourselves, recognizing that greater understanding and awareness on diversity and inclusion are essential.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
