ATTORNEY SAYS HE \u2018NEARLY LOST HOPE\u2019<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>The former <i>Empire<\/i> actor, now 39, claimed he was assaulted in 2019 by two men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him while tying a noose around his neck. Police said he manufactured the story to advance his career, but the actor denied the claim. Smollett also said <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/people\/2019\/01\/29\/empire-star-jussie-smollett-assaulted-possible-homophobic-attack\/2709986002\/\">his attackers yelled<\/a> \u201cThis is MAGA country!\u201d during the incident. The onetime actor, who is black and gay, was convicted in December on five counts of felony disorderly conduct and acquitted on a sixth. He had pleaded not guilty to the counts. <\/p>\n<p>Smollett spends part of his new track chastising those who do not believe he was attacked. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some people searching for fame, some people chasing that clout,&#8221; Smollett sings. &#8220;Just remember this. &#8230; This ain\u2019t that situation. You think I\u2019m stupid enough to kill my reputation?&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jussie-smollett\">Smollett<\/a> was <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/jussie-smollett-to-be-released-from-jail-pending-appeal\">released from jail<\/a> last month, just one week after being sentenced for making false police reports. In a 2-1 decision, the court ruled to release Smollett on a $150,000 personal recognizance bond while awaiting an appeal of his conviction.
