Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/17\/us-will-pay-who-more-than-200-million-in-membership-fees-withheld-by-trump.html\">reportedly<\/a> made this announcement during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-remarks-to-the-un-security-council-briefing-on-covid-19-and-vaccine-access\/\">videoconference<\/a> to the United Nations Security Council. In his remarks, Blinken said, \u201cThe United States will work with our partners across the globe to expand manufacturing and distribution capacity and to increase access, including to marginalized populations.\u201d He added that the \u201cUnited States will once again serve as a global health leader,\u201d noting that the U.S. \u201cbelieves that multilateralism, the United Nations, the World Health Organization are essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blinken said that while the COVID-19 crisis is still an \u201cimmediate challenge,\u201d there is \u201ca longer challenge, but equally vital, in establishing the strongest possible global health structure going forward.\u201d He referred to news of a recent \u201cEbola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea,\u201d saying there is \u201cno time to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He detailed the United States\u2019 involvement in global health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-remarks-to-the-un-security-council-briefing-on-covid-19-and-vaccine-access\/\">saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Over the past two decades, the United States has provided more than $140 billion in global health assistance. We\u2019re now the single largest contributor to the international response to COVID-19.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today, I\u2019m pleased to confirm that by the end of the month the United States intends to pay over 200 million in assessed and current obligations to the WHO. This is a key step forward in fulfilling our financial obligations as a WHO member. And it reflects our renewed commitment to ensuring the WHO has the support it needs to lead the global response to the pandemic, even as we work to reform it for the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Blinken called on all countries to do their part, \u201cand contribute to the COVID-19 response.\u201d Speaking on the commitment that the United States has already made, Blinken continued, \u201cWe\u2019ve already announced more than $1.6 billion in emergency economic, health, and humanitarian aid to try to help governments, international organizations, and NGOs mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and its secondary impacts worldwide. And that\u2019s in addition to a commitment of $1.16 billion over fiscal years 2020 through 2023 to support Gavi\u2019s broader immunization efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden reversed a decision of his predecessor to withdraw from the World Health Organization shortly after taking office.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/17\/us-will-pay-who-more-than-200-million-in-membership-fees-withheld-by-trump.html\">CNBC<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>In October, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he hoped the United States would reconsider its decision to leave the WHO, adding that the coronavirus can\u2019t be defeated \u201cin a divided world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe problem is not about the money. It\u2019s not the financing that\u2019s the issue. It\u2019s actually the relationship with the U.S. that\u2019s more important and its leadership abroad,\u201d Ghebreyesus told a virtual audience at the Aspen Security Forum.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Blinken added that countries must also \u201cbe held accountable for upholding their human rights obligations. No country should be allowed to use COVID-19 as an excuse to violate human rights or fundamental freedoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of State called on countries to combat any misinformation regarding vaccines, noting, \u201cIf we don\u2019t, we seriously jeopardize our mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding current health crises and future ones, Blinken said that, \u201call countries must make available all data from the earliest days of any outbreak.
