Speaking with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, Biden fielded questions from audience members, some of whom voted for him and some of whom did not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a similar fashion to Biden\u2019s television appearances while on the campaign trail, and the first days of his administration, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/02\/17\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-a-cnn-town-hall-with-anderson-cooper\/\">town hall<\/a> event was dripping with falsehoods and misleading arguments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here is a breakdown of some such statements made during the CNN Presidential Town Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen we came into office, there was only 50 million doses that were available.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Speaking on the subject of vaccine availability, Biden stated that he expected every American to be able to get a vaccine \u201cby the end of July this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have \u2014 we came into office, there was only 50 million doses that were available.&nbsp; We have now \u2014 by the end of July, we\u2019ll have over 600 million doses \u2014 enough to vaccinate every single American.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s unclear what data he is basing that on, but in early December,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/leahrosenbaum\/2020\/12\/07\/the-us-has-ordered-enough-of-pfizers-covid-19-vaccine-for-50-million-people-but-thats-all\/?sh=f864f8e2c2db\"><span>Forbes<\/span><\/a> <span>reported that the U.S. government \u201cannounced a deal with Pfizer and BioNTech to purchase 100 million doses of the vaccine.\u201d Technically, 100 million doses were available, enough to vaccinate 50 million Americans with two doses. In addition, Forbes reported \u201cThe deal also included an option for the government to purchase an additional 500 million doses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Forbes, a spokesperson for Health and Human Services stated that they were also expecting \u201c100 million doses on the way from Moderna.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/21\/health\/covid-vaccine-supply-biden.html\"><span>New York Times<\/span><\/a> <span>reported on January 21 that \u201cThe two companies with authorized vaccines, Moderna and Pfizer, have each promised to provide the United States with 100 million vaccine doses by the end of March, or enough for 100 million people to get the necessary two shots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If Forbes\u2019 report is accurate, then Biden was incorrect to say that there were only 50 million doses \u201cavailable\u201d at the start of his administration. It\u2019s also misleading to claim that the increase of available doses is purely a result of Biden\u2019s policies, given that millions of additional doses were promised before he entered office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to have the vaccine, which we didn\u2019t have when we came into office\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Continuing on the subject of vaccines, Biden then claimed that there was no vaccine available at the start of his administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd the biggest thing, though, as you remember when you and I \u2014 no, I shouldn\u2019t say it that way, \u2018as you remember\u2019 \u2014 but when you and I talked last, we talked about \u2014 it\u2019s one thing to have the vaccine, which we didn\u2019t have when we came into office, but a vaccinator \u2014 how do you get the vaccine into someone\u2019s arm?&nbsp; So you need the paraphernalia.&nbsp; You need the needle, and you need mechanisms to be able to get it in.&nbsp; You have to have people who can inject it into people\u2019s arms,\u201d Biden told Cooper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier, Biden had also said that \u201cWhat we did, we got into office and found out the supply, there was no backlog, I mean, there was nothing in the refrigerator, figuratively and literally speaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler defended these false arguments, with his first claim being an example of a \u201ctypical Biden gaffe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It was a verbal stumble, a typical Biden gaffe, as he had already mentioned 50 million doses being available when he took office. Ex Trump officials should especially cool the outrage meter, as it just looks silly. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HFjH01lXgH\">https:\/\/t.co\/HFjH01lXgH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Glenn Kessler (@GlennKesslerWP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GlennKesslerWP\/status\/1361879261691396104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>CNN\u2019s fact checker Daniel Dale also defended Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden had said just prior that there were &#8220;only&#8221; 50 million vaccine doses when he took office. I&#8217;m looking into that claim (and a bunch of other claims Biden made tonight), but he clearly wasn&#8217;t trying to claim the vaccine did not exist at all under Trump. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2EtKDWyR7o\">https:\/\/t.co\/2EtKDWyR7o<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daniel Dale (@ddale8) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ddale8\/status\/1361876593921122305?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Open the majority of schools\u2026 \u201cin K-through-eighth grade\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In early December, Joe Biden<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/jen-psaki-walks-back-bidens-promise-to-open-schools-in-100-days-some-teaching-in-classrooms-at-least-one-day-per-week\"><span>pledged<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201cto bring the coronavirus pandemic under enough control to open most of the nation\u2019s schools during his first 100 days as president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>White House press secretary Jen Psaki backtracked earlier this month, saying that Biden\u2019s goal \u201cis to have the majority of schools, so more than 50 percent, open by day 100 of his presidency. And that means some teaching in classrooms. So at least one a day week, hopefully it\u2019s more. And obviously it is as much as is safe in each school and local district.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Cooper stated, \u201cyour administration had set a goal to open the majority of schools in your first 100 days. You\u2019re now saying that means those schools may only be open for at least one day a week,\u201d Biden responded with \u201cNo, that\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s what was reported; that\u2019s not true. There was a mistake in the communication. But what I \u2014 what I\u2019m talking about is I said opening the majority of schools in K-through-eighth grade because they\u2019re the easiest to open, the most needed to be opened, in terms of the impact on children and families having to stay home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This \u201cmistake in the communication\u201d places the blame on Jen Psaki, while ignoring that Biden stated in December that his \u201cteam will work to see that the majority of our schools can be open by the end of my first 100 days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden flip-flops on vaccine priority<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Continuing on the subject of COVID-19 vaccinations, Biden was asked whether there is a plan to prioritize those who are \u201cmost vulnerable\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When asked, \u201cDo you have a plan to vaccinate those who are most vulnerable sooner, to give them a priority?\u201d Biden said, \u201cWell, the answer is: Yes, there are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The next audience member asked Biden whether vaccine assignment based on \u201cracial equity\u201d was a priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cConsidering COVID-19 and its significant impact on black Americans, especially here in Milwaukee, and thus the exacerbation of our racial disparities in healthcare, we have seen less than 3 percent of blacks and less than 5 percent of Hispanics, given the total number of vaccines that have been administered to this point.&nbsp; Is this a priority for the Biden administration?&nbsp; And how will the disparities be addressed?&nbsp; And that\u2019s both locally and nationally,\u201d Biden was asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWell, first of all, it is a priority, number one,\u201d the president responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These two answers are, arguably, incompatible, given that race is not a primary risk factor for COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll create 7 million jobs this year. Seven million jobs this year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Speaking of his COVID relief proposals, Biden said that \u201cwe can come roaring back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s estimated that if we \u2014 by most economists, including Wall Street firms, as well as \u2014 as \u2014 as, you know, think tanks \u2014 political think tanks \u2014 left, right, and center \u2014 it is estimated that if we pass this bill alone, we\u2019ll create 7 million jobs this year.&nbsp; Seven million jobs this year,\u201d Biden said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/biden-rescue-plan-could-close-10-million-lost-jobs-181903486.html\"><span>According<\/span><\/a> <span>to Marki Zandi, chief economist of Moody\u2019s Analytics, the U.S. job market would recover to its pre-pandemic levels by fall of 2022 if Biden\u2019s \u201crescue plan\u201d is implemented, with the economy creating 7.5 million jobs in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the bipartisan nature of Biden\u2019s claims are massively overblown, with his proposals receiving<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/02\/05\/biden-rescue-plan-critics-466124\"><span>criticism<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201cfrom both parties on Friday after Larry Summers, a former top White House economic adviser in the Obama administration, penned an op-ed warning that the administration\u2019s massive spending package could funnel too much money into the economy, eventually sparking high inflation and crowding out other progressive policy priorities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump didn\u2019t condemn the Proud Boys<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>After claiming that he \u201cgot involved in politics to begin with because of civil rights and opposition to white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan\u201d \u2014 which itself is questionable&nbsp;\u2014 Biden then stated that he \u201casked [Trump] to condemn the Proud Boys\u201d during their debate, and that \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is simply inaccurate. During the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/09\/30\/presidential-debate-read-full-transcript-first-debate\/3587462001\/\"><span>debate<\/span><\/a><span>, Fox News\u2019 Chris Wallace asked Trump whether he was \u201c<\/span><span>willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups? And to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities, as we saw in Kenosha, as we\u2019ve seen in Portland? Are you prepared specifically to do that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump responded immediately with \u201cSure, I\u2019m prepared to do it.\u201d During the confused argument which followed, Trump asked Wallace \u201cWhat do you want to call them?\u201d Wallace responded \u201cWhite supremacists and, white supremacists and right-wing\u2026\u201d while Biden interrupted saying \u201cThe Proud Boys,\u201d who are not a white supremacist group. Trump then said \u201cProud Boys, stand back and stand by,\u201d not \u201cStand by. Stand ready,\u201d as Biden claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Trump\u2019s response was a valid target of criticism, it is false for Biden to claim that this unclear interaction between three parties was equivalent to Trump refusing to condemn the Proud Boys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Racist insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>While speaking on the subject of systemic racism, Biden claimed that higher insurance premiums in \u201cblack neighborhoods\u201d was an example of institutional bigotry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>You realize \u2014 I don\u2019t know what home you live in, but if you go ahead and you want to get insurance, and you\u2019re in a black neighborhood, you\u2019re going to pay more for the same insurance that I\u2019m going to pay for the exact same home.&nbsp; Your car \u2014 you never had an accident in your car.&nbsp; If you live in a black neighborhood, you\u2019re going to pay a higher premium on your car.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whether intentionally or otherwise, Biden misses the obvious fact that insurance premiums are priced based on risk. Location is a factor when estimating risk, and if there is higher crime in one neighborhood compared to another, for example, then the risk factors are higher. Given that \u201c<\/span><span>low-income people and racial and ethnic minorities are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huduser.gov\/portal\/periodicals\/em\/summer16\/highlight2.html\"><span>disproportionately<\/span><\/a> <span>affected\u201d by violent crime, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/even-as-metropolitan-areas-diversify-white-americans-still-live-in-mostly-white-neighborhoods\/\"><span>neighborhoods<\/span><\/a> <span>are generally grouped by race, its unsurprising that, due to a correlation between communities with a larger minority population and the rate of crime, insurance premiums in these areas will be higher.
