Greg Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/05\/greg-abbott-special-election-hispanic-red\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ordered<\/a> the special election for Texas\u2019 34th Congressional District on Monday after the Democrat holding the seat retired early. A border district with an overwhelmingly Hispanic population, the race could serve as an important indicator of how the demographic will vote in the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>CPR senior editor David Wasserman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/house\/texas-house\/tx-34-special-election-gives-gop-early-south-texas-gift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> the June special election was coming at the \u201cworst possible time\u201d for Democrats, as the Biden administration recently announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/07\/mark-kelly-kyrsten-sinema-joe-biden-title-42\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rescind<\/a> Title 42, a measure enacted during the pandemic that allows for the quick expulsion of migrants.<\/p>\n<p>The rating is the second bit of disheartening news for liberals to come from Wasserman recently after Cook Political Report <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/30\/democrats-lose-redistricting-maryland-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowered<\/a> the number of seats Democrats were expected to gain from redistricting to only one or two.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7406598\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7406598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Texas Governor Greg Abbott speaks during the Houston Region Business Coalition\u2019s monthly meeting on October 27, 2021 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Brandon Bell\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The district will become much bluer in November due to redistricting, but Wasserman said the current lines give Republicans the opportunity to flip the seat. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/05\/florida-charlie-crist-ron-desantis-latinos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Wrought With Entitlement\u2019: Florida Dems Forced Back To The Drawing Board Over Cratering Latino Support)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mayra Flores, the GOP nominee of the district, has already said she will campaign in the special election, while her general election opponent, Rep. Vincente Gonzalez, who currently represents Texas\u2019s 15th Congressional District, has said he will wait until November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very glad that we\u2019re going to be able to have a special election,\u201d Flores told the Daily Caller News Foundation after the special election was announced. \u201cThis district does need someone to represent them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flores is one of potentially six <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/06\/gop-hispanic-female-candidates-texas-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hispanic women that could represent the GOP<\/a> in Texas in the midterms.
