That is not doing much to increase belief amongst the public that the Fourth Estate is all that interested in bolstering democracy or combatting disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/college-freshman-corners-liberal-journalist-at-q-and-a-for-dismissing-hunter-biden-laptop-in-viral-exchange\">covered<\/a> on Thursday, Applebaum dismissed the story regarding Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop and his foreign business dealings as \u201ctotally irrelevant\u201d to the presidential election even if it was not \u201cdisinformation.\u201d Of course, potentially unethical business ventures acquired only because of Hunter\u2019s dad\u2019s position in the government, with speculation that the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pressure-mounting-on-joe-biden-after-nyt-acknowledges-hunter-biden-laptop\">Big Guy<\/a>\u201d even benefited himself, are highly relevant.<\/p>\n<p>But Stelter\u2019s appearance may have topped Applebaum\u2019s. On Thursday afternoon, a college freshman asked the CNN anchor about his network\u2019s own \u201cdisinformation\u201d regarding several major news stories over the past few years. After joking about heading out to lunch, Stelter dismissed the premise behind the question as a \u201cpopular right-wing narrative\u201d before glibly hiding behind his colleagues\u2019 actions on the war front in Ukraine as evidence that CNN acts in good faith and is a trustworthy news source.<\/p>\n<p>NewsBusters\u2019 Nicholas Fondacaro <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1512125598440824833?s=20&#038;t=IG7_gtEC-jLF-4jucITDuA\">flagged<\/a> the clip, tweeting, \u201cFreshman Christopher Phillips CALLS OUT Brian Stelter and CNN for being a \u2018purveyor of disinformation.\u2019 He points to the Russian collusion hoax, Jussie Smollett, the smears of Justice Kavanaugh and Nick Sandmann, and their dismissal of Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phillips also asked if the \u201ccanon of journalistic ethics is dead or no longer operative\u201d while noting that \u201call the mistakes of the mainstream media, and CNN in particular, seem to magically all go in one direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we expected to believe that this is all just some sort of random coincidence or is there something else behind it?\u201d Phillips posed to Stelter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think my honest answer to you \u2014 and I\u2019ll come over and talk in more detail after this \u2014 is that I think you\u2019re describing a different channel than the one that I watch, but I understand that that is a popular right-wing narrative about CNN,\u201d Stelter responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important when we talk about shared reality and democracy, all these networks, all these news outlets have to defend democracy, and when they screw up \u2014 admit it,\u201d Stelter added.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the irony in Stelter\u2019s answer is that he did not \u201cadmit\u201d that CNN botched and incorrectly reported the stories that Phillips mentioned. He simply dismissed them as part of a talking point contrived by the Right. He did not even attempt to justify his network\u2019s reporting, other than saying that the college student was watching a \u201cdifferent channel\u201d than the one he had seen.<\/p>\n<p>Stelter\u2019s response continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when Benjamin Hall, the Fox correspondent, was wounded in Ukraine, the news crews at CNN and The New York Times stopped what they were doing,\u201d Stelter said, referencing the Fox News journalist who suffered injuries while reporting in war-torn Ukraine. \u201cThey tried to help. They tried to help them get out of the country, they tried to find the dead crew members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what news outlets do,\u201d Stelter boldly declared before partially addressing a previous question. \u201cThat\u2019s how they actually do work together, to your question about sharing those kinds of connections and trust, we don\u2019t talk about it enough though. We don\u2019t share that reality about how that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the actions taken to help Hall and others wounded in Ukraine might have been noble, it does not exactly secure confidence that CNN will make a more concerted effort to report the truth any time soon. Furthermore, it does not provide any proof that CNN will give stories that originate with \u201cconservative\u201d news outlets any more credence, rather than dismissing them out of hand as they had done in the past with stories like Hunter\u2019s laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn regards to the regime, I think you mean President Biden?\u201d Stelter continued in answering Phillips\u2019 question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last time I spoke with a Biden aide, we yelled at each other,\u201d Stelter said, as if that were proof he was a member of the adversarial media. Keep in mind that this is the same guy who asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki during an interview for advice on what the <em>media<\/em> gets wrong in covering the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Stelter continued, \u201cSo that\u2019s the reality of the news business that people don\u2019t see, that people don\u2019t hear. They imagine that it\u2019s a situation that it simply is not. But I think your question, it speaks to the failure of journalism to show our work and show the reality of how our profession operates. We have a lot of work to do, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In short, Stelter\u2019s response is not an admission that his network pushed around-the-clock fake news on some of the biggest stories since 2016. No, the real tragedy, in Stelter\u2019s mind, is that the American people just don\u2019t understand how the news business works.<\/p>\n<p>Despite not addressing any of the fake news mentioned by the student, the CNN star wants you to believe that the legacy media is full of staunch defenders of democracy and they can prove it \u2014 like that one time he got yelled at by a Biden aide or something.<\/p>\n<p>Stelter, what a guy.
