Hardscrabble Chinese farmers might be less sanguine than Communist Party editorialists about the price of fertilizer increasing by 30 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Global Times<\/span><\/i> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202204\/1257682.shtml\">continued<\/a> its harangue on Wednesday with the first of a promised three-part installment \u201cinvestigating\u201d the \u201csmear tactics\u201d employed by foreign reporters who think China might be headed for a food crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first installment spent a great deal of time questioning the motives of media outlets that report bad news about China, and very little on disputing any of the disturbing information. For example, the outlet<\/span><i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>unleashed a lengthy tirade against a Taiwanese \u201cconspiracy theory\u201d analyst who noted Chinese social media posts from late last year about alleged food hoarding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By the end of its \u201cinvestigative report,\u201d the <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>was reduced to whining that if a food crisis does break out, it is the fault of the United States, which is somehow responsible for Russia invading Ukraine and disrupting global food and fertilizer markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One reason Communist Party propagandists dump so much ink on the food crisis story is that it can be seen as an indictment of China\u2019s draconian \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/chinas-zero-covid-policy-under-pressure-as-cases-rise\/\">zero-Covid<\/a>\u201d policies.
