See: the Atlantic\u2019s Anne Applebaum.<\/p>\n<p>Applebaum, a supposed disinformation expert, is unconcerned that the corporate press conspired during the 2020 election to censor legitimate news reports suggesting President Joe Biden\u2019s son, Hunter Biden, may have leveraged his father\u2019s political clout to line the family\u2019s pockets.<\/p>\n<p>The censorship incident is unremarkable, she says, because the alleged Biden corruption is itself unremarkable.<\/p>\n<p>Applebaum\u2019s comments came during an appearance at the ironically titled \u201cDisinformation and the Erosion of Democracy\u201d conference in Chicago. An attendee, University of Chicago student Daniel Schmidt, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/07\/barack-obama-and-company-dishonestly-lecture-uchicago-students-on-disinformation\/\">confronted<\/a> Applebaum with her initial thoughts on the New York Post\u2019s election-year scoop detailing the existence of a laptop, which reportedly belonged to Hunter Biden, and possibly incriminating documents and emails pertaining to the younger Biden\u2019s overseas business activities. One such email purports to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/14\/email-reveals-how-hunter-biden-introduced-ukrainian-biz-man-to-dad\/\">show<\/a> Biden introduced his father, then the vice president, \u201cto a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Applebaum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/10\/smears-against-biden-dont-need-make-any-sense\/616824\/\">remarked<\/a>, \u201cThose who live outside the Fox News bubble and intend to remain there do not, of course, need to learn any of this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was not alone in reflexively downplaying the laptop story. In fact, the broader press at the time falsely characterized the New York Post\u2019s exclusive coverage as \u201cRussian disinformation.\u201d The New York Times this year <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/21\/the-new-york-times-doesnt-care-if-you-know-that-big-tech-helped-rig-joe-bidens-election\/\">confirmed<\/a> the authenticity of the Biden emails.<\/p>\n<p>In Chicago, Schmidt referenced a Media Research Center survey that shows 17 percent of polled Biden voters would have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/24\/poll-one-in-six-biden-voters-would-have-changed-their-vote-if-they-had-known-about-scandals-suppressed-by-media\/\">changed<\/a> their vote had they been aware of various Biden-related scandals, including the laptop, which the press actively dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded, \u201cDo you think the media acted inappropriately when they instantly dismissed Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop as \u2018Russian disinformation\u2019? What can be learned from that and ensuring that what we label as disinformation is truly disinformation and not reality?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Applebaum managed somehow to give a worse response than her initial reaction in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy problem with Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop is I think totally irrelevant,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean it\u2019s not whether it\u2019s disinformation or I mean I don\u2019t think the \u2013 Hunter Biden\u2019s business relationships have anything to do with who should be president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cSo, I didn\u2019t \u2013 I don\u2019t find it to be interesting. I mean that would be my problem with that as a major news story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Applebaum\u2019s answer raises several difficult questions.<\/p>\n<p>First, is she under the impression the laptop story involves only Hunter Biden?<\/p>\n<p>Is she not aware that emails and related documents suggest Hunter Biden may serve (or may have served) as a bagman for his father, leveraging the Biden name to funnel cash into the family\u2019s coffers? Does she not see the news value in documents suggesting the president\u2019s son may have used his father\u2019s position in the federal government to enrich both himself and other family members?<\/p>\n<p>Does she not see the news value in the fact Hunter Biden\u2019s overseas business activities, which may lead all the way back to the president, are under FBI investigation?<\/p>\n<p>Does she not see the news value in the corporate press backtracking on its bogus \u201cRussian disinformation\u201d consensus?<\/p>\n<p>One would think a speaker at the \u201cDisinformation and the Erosion of Democracy\u201d conference would find all of this incredibly <em>interesting<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What, exactly, does Applebaum, a supposed expert on disinformation and democracy, find \u201cinteresting\u201d? Let\u2019s review some of her previous headlines:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/11\/patriot-purge-tucker-carlson-documentary\/620589\/\">\u201cTucker Carlson is stirring up hatred of America.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/07\/mike-lindells-plot-destroy-america\/619593\/\">\u201cThe MyPillow guy really could destroy democracy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/07\/laura-ingrahams-descent-into-despair\/614245\/\">\u201cLaura Ingraham\u2019s descent into despair.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Uh-huh.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, CBS News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/us-banks-flagged-over-150-transactions-involving-bidens-brother-or-son-for-further-review\/\">reported<\/a> at least 150 transactions involving either Hunter or James Biden\u2019s global business affairs were flagged as concerning by U.S. banks for further review.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say that\u2019s pretty <em>interesting <\/em>\u2014 <em>relevant <\/em>even.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  T.
