Sent Pandemic Food Stamps to Thousands of Affluent Families \u2013                                                   Biden Admin Defends the Move as Lawful Amid Intensifying Debate Over More Accountability for COVID Funds <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uxN63aQ8tw\">https:\/\/t.co\/uxN63aQ8tw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susan Crabtree (@susancrabtree) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/susancrabtree\/status\/1512035955481272322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the report, the eligibility method used to send out the payments appeared to include schools that fit into a federal school lunch category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA California DSS spokesperson tells RCP that 854 schools in the state fit into the same federal school lunch category as the two schools in North County San Diego where all students received the cards \u2013 Torrey Pines High School and La Costa Canyon High School,\u201d the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf all students at these schools received the cards regardless of income, as appears to be the case, it would amount to more than $1 billion in federal P-EBT going to California students who usually wouldn\u2019t qualify for federal reimbursement for free breakfasts and lunches,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>California DSS spokesperson Theresa Mier told the outlet there were 853 Provision 2 schools across the state in which the entire student body received the food cards.<\/p>\n<p>RealClearPolitics further noted that the widespread food card program may extend beyond California. The report cited an Atlanta-area school system that mentioned several thousand students receiving similar cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA spokesperson with the Georgia Department of Human Services said some students are automatically eligible for the benefit if they attend a\u00a0Community Eligibility Provision school, which is why thousands of students across the state received P-EBT cards in the mail,\u201d 11-Alive News Atlanta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/education\/mcbath-student-meals-georgia-pebt\/85-3c7d81b4-0275-4fcb-b152-04a0ead26841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In California, the concern includes both sending the pre-loaded cards to affluent households as well as complaints that an alleged $183 million in cards did not reach needy families.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Community complaints arise over reports of high school students using the P-EBT debit cards on trips to Wholefoods for sushi and cookouts, graduation parties. John Boozman, the ranking Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee overseeing the school lunch programs, shared a statement claiming that, if true, the misuse of funds is \u201cwrong\u201d and \u201cfuels erosion of trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUSDA has not chosen to share this information with us, but if true, it raises a number of concerns,\u201d Boozman told RCP in the statement. \u201cCongress never intended for the Pandemic EBT program to be used in the manner described. It is supposed to be administered in a targeted and means-tested way to ensure it reaches those who need the assistance. The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/senate-gop-blocks-covid-funding-over-fight-to-keep-trump-era-immigration-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>All 50 Republicans in the Senate voted against advancing the bill Tuesday, along with Democratic\u00a0 Senators Ron Wyden (OR) and Chuck Schumer (NY). According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/06\/gop-blocks-senate-covid-bill-over-push-for-title-42-restoration\/\">New York Post<\/a>, Schumer changed his vote at the last minute, a procedural move so that he could bring the bill to the floor again. Democrats need 60 votes to pass a procedural hurdle needed to advance the bill to debate and a vote, but Republicans threatened to kill the bill unless their demands for an amendment to keep Title 42 in place are met.
