Let\u2019s be honest, this is a political show trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, born out of response to the failed proposal for a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/05\/19\/no-self-respecting-republican-would-vote-for-democrats-partisan-jan-6-commission\/\">9\/11-style commission<\/a> last summer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s hand-picked panel to investigate the Capitol riot has become the latest effort by Democrats to weaponize state power against citizens who question the legitimacy of the regime.<\/p>\n<p>While ostensibly established to probe the security failures on January 6, the panel\u2019s subpoenas issued under <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/10\/j6-committee-misleading-witnesses-about-republican-staff-presence\/\">questionable authority<\/a> have almost entirely targeted entities and individuals with no direct involvement with the turmoil on Capitol Hill, including the Republican National Committee in a modern-day \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/25\/jan-6-committee-claims-its-digital-watergate-is-above-the-law\/\">digital Watergate<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to a Federalist analysis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/january6th.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\">committee subpoenas<\/a> to date, fewer than 10 percent are related to violence. The rest have taken aim at public and private citizens who dared question an election outcome in a contest that featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/01\/28\/turnout-soared-in-2020-as-nearly-two-thirds-of-eligible-u-s-voters-cast-ballots-for-president\/\">record-level turnout in the\u00a0<\/a>form of mail-in voting monopolized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/mollie-hemingway-mark-zuckerberg-election-facebook-tucker-carlson\">left-wing private actors<\/a> run under <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/06\/j6-hysteria-is-how-media-and-other-democrats-are-avoiding-accountability-for-their-rigging-of-the-2020-election\/\">last-minute rule changes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The intended effect has been a chill on free speech as the committee\u2019s declared enemies of the state are dragged before Congress, their private records handed over to be <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/30\/the-attacks-on-clarence-and-ginni-thomas-are-merely-latest-in-a-decades-long-smear-campaign\/\">selectively leaked<\/a>, and their freedom threatened by contempt charges. The committee <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/29\/dismissing-negotiation-efforts-j6-committee-recommends-holding-more-trump-advisers-in-contempt\/\">dismissed<\/a> good-faith efforts from Scavino and others to meet the panel\u2019s requests for records without compromising the integrity of private conversations between the president\u2019s staff litigated under executive privilege. <\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s probe has continued to operate in the absence of minority representation after the speaker took the self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nancy-pelosi-vetoes-republicans-january-6-committee-11626904913\">unprecedented<\/a>\u201d step to bar Republican-appointed members from the panel. Instead, Republican Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio have led their own investigation into the Capitol security failures after Pelosi replaced them with Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and Illinois\u2019s Adam Kinzinger. <\/p>\n<p>The prohibition of Republican-appointed representation has barred GOP access to the same material accessed by members of the committee as its nine-member panel of Pelosi\u2019s deputies combs through records to smear its opposition. The Select Committee has even <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/12\/liz-cheney-is-using-the-jan-6-committee-to-persecute-an-activist-running-a-super-pac-to-unseat-her\/\">subpoenaed records<\/a> from a political consultant operating a political action committee in Wyoming to unseat Cheney, who serves as the probe\u2019s vice chair, despite no involvement in any events on Jan. 6 within the capital. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Select Committee aims to do two things,\u201d Banks said on the House floor Wednesday, \u201csilence legitimate questions about the breakdown of security at the Capitol and punish their political opponents. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas, who serves on Banks\u2019 committee probing the riot, said the speaker\u2019s panel ought to investigate Yogananda Pittman, the head of intelligence for the Capitol Police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the sham select committee was serious about seeking justice for January 6th, they would focus on the people that allowed it to happen,\u201d Nehls told The Federalist. \u201c[Pittman] had the intelligence days before January 6th \u2014 what stopped her from acting on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/16\/nancy-pelosi-owns-january-6\/\">culpability<\/a> in the Capitol security lapses has also warranted scrutiny that her deputies in the House have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/20\/politics\/january-6-probe-republican-strategy\/index.html\">pledged to overlook<\/a>. As the speaker of the House, Pelosi reportedly rejected requests to dispatch reinforcements from the National Guard six times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/sund-riot-national-guard\/2021\/01\/10\/fc2ce7d4-5384-11eb-a817-e5e7f8a406d6_story.html\">according<\/a> to testimony from former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
