Spencer Cox was caught on camera telling middle and high school students his \u201cpreferred pronouns\u201d \u2014 a concept created by transgender activists to help convince people they can choose the sex they \u201cidentify\u201d with.<\/p>\n<p>Cox identified himself as\u00a0 \u201che, him, and his\u201d after a student who called herself a \u201cbisexual woman\u201d listed her pronouns and asked the governor about mental health resources for youth who believe they are gay or lesbians, during\u00a0an April 13, 2021 virtual #OneUtah Student Town Hall.\u00a0Twitter user Adam Bartholomew broadcast the video after he posted a shortened compilation of the town hall on Tuesday. The post received more than 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments from other users, including political figures and commentators.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I would call it buyer\u2019s remorse, but there\u2019s a lot of people who are having heartburn because this is not what they signed up for,\u201d\u00a0Utah Republican Party Carson Jorgensen said in response during an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Utah &#8220;republican&#8221; Governor Spencer Cox shares his preferred pronouns with students to teach kids leadership with Equity &#038; Inclusion<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/utpol?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#utpol<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovCox?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GovCox<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpencerJCox?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SpencerJCox<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Utah?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Utah<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ioLWv7WC4r\">pic.twitter.com\/ioLWv7WC4r<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adam Bartholomew \ud83d\udde8\ufe0f (@lifeisdriving) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifeisdriving\/status\/1511390828496769028?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThank you so much Gabby for that question. And my preferred pronouns are he, him, and his. So thank you for sharing yours with me,\u201d Cox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/govcox\/videos\/129822102379507\/\">said<\/a> in the town hall. Cox addressed \u201cmask mandates, sex education, gun violence, and more,\u201d according to the description of the virtual event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The shortened clip also includes a portion of the town hall showing Cox talking about \u201cequity and inclusion,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/19\/federal-civil-rights-complaint-filed-against-illinois-school-over-racial-segregation\/\">buzzwords<\/a> based on the teachings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/06\/13\/pollak-critical-race-theory-explained\/\">Critical Race Theory<\/a> (CRT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeading with equity and inclusion starts at a young age, and the students that are joining us today have shown great leadership through their academic achievement and civic participation in our state,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News reached out to Cox\u2019s office for comment and also asked if the governor routinely shares his \u201cpreferred pronouns\u201d and if he believes sharing them with students is appropriate. His office did not respond by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>Jorgensen said Cox catering to the far-left agenda goes \u201cabsolutely against everything we believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the governor is out of step with what people in the state and especially Republicans in the state really feel,\u201d Jorgensen said.\u00a0\u201cAs a state party, we want to support him, but this is not something we can support. And this is not something the majority of Republicans and the majority of people \u2014 not just Republicans here in the state \u2014 are in for.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Jorgensen said Cox\u2019s behavior in the the town hall seems to be part of a greater emerging pattern. Cox recently vetoed a GOP-led measure that would ban males from playing in female sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/25\/utah-governor-vetoes-transgender-athlete-bill-i-try-to-err-on-side-of-compassion\/\">saying<\/a> he tries to \u201cerr of the side of compassion.\u201d However, the state legislature had enough votes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/26\/utah-legislature-overrides-governors-veto-of-bill-banning-transgender-youth-in-sports\/\">override<\/a> Cox\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n<p>Before and after his election, Cox has been rather vocal in his support for the LGBTQ+ community, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2021\/6\/8\/22522806\/6-questions-for-utah-gov-spencer-cox-about-lgbtq-pride-month-intolerance-lgbt-community-salt-lake\"><em>Desert News<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0In June 2021, the Republican governor<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0even\u00a0<\/span>designated the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month \u2014 \u201cthe first such statewide designation in Utah\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Cox sat down with Desert News for a Q &#038; A about LBGTQ+ Pride, and said he has \u201cbeen attacked for pushing an agenda of kindness and inclusion.\u201d The reporter asked Cox if he has faced backlash within his own party for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues, to which he said \u201cI certainly have.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He said in part:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I think from a very base, practical, political standpoint, I think that it\u2019s critical to the survival of the party. I think there\u2019s a younger generation for sure \u2014 my own kids are good examples of this \u2014 that see the world very differently, and I can\u2019t imagine why anyone would be hostile toward this segment of our society.<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, as a Republican, this is who we are. I believe that the conservative movement is about empowering individuals and helping everyone to be successful, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs or their sexual orientation. And so I actually think it\u2019s very firmly with the party of Lincoln, that we would be the party that seeks to help others to lift those, especially those that are the most marginalized, and those that are struggling, to give them the same opportunities as everyone else.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jorgensen pointed Breitbart News to a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/kutv.com\/news\/beyond-the-books\/gov-cox-looks-to-change-the-way-state-board-of-education-is-selected-utah\">2KUTV report<\/a> in which Cox said he wanted to change how state school board members are elected. Utah notably went to a partisan system in 2020, meaning state school board members must identify with a political party. Then, Utahns vote for who best represents them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>But according to the outlet, Cox believed his inability to be able to appoint board members \u201ctakes accountability away from his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery governor runs to be the \u2018education governor,\u2019 to work on education issues,\u201d Cox said. \u201cThe truth is the governor (of Utah) probably has less direct impact on K-12 education than any governor in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jorgensen said Cox\u2019s desire to be more involved with the state\u2019s education, combined with his use of preferred pronouns and continued deference to the transgender agenda \u201chas a lot of people on edge.\u201d He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is why people are upset. The school board races here in Utah are pretty heated because we want to have control, and the populous wants to have control over what goes into our curriculum and what our children are learning in school. And when we start hearing the governor, you know, using the democratic [buzz words] and using preferred pronouns to speak to little kids\u2026[it] has a lot of people on edge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The chairman added that the influence of the Mormon church (the Church of the Latter Day Saints) is \u201csuch a predominant figure in the state,\u201d and has been \u201cvery clear on their stance on gender and marriage.\u201d The Church of the Latter Day Saints\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/abn.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/manual\/eternal-marriage-student-manual\/differences-inherent-between-men-and-women?lang=eng&#038;adobe_mc_ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.churchofjesuschrist.org%2Fstudy%2Fmanual%2Feternal-marriage-student-manual%2Fdifferences-inherent-between-men-and-women%3Flang%3Deng&#038;adobe_mc_sdid=SDID%3D26490C34C28E9891-6FA58181BFE31CCC%7CMCORGID%3D66C5485451E56AAE0A490D45%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1649288620\">website<\/a> indeed lists its position on \u201cgender\u201d and sexuality:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a day when there are many political, legal, and social pressures for changes that confuse gender and homogenize the differences between men and women. Our eternal perspective sets us against changes that alter those separate duties and privileges of men and women that are essential to accomplish the great plan of happiness,\u201d reads a selective teaching from\u00a0Elder James E. Faust.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the governor has done some good things like signing the state\u2019s constitutional carry bill, Jorgenson said, social issues are \u201cwhere the rubber meets the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe social issues are the ones that have these people fired up, and he just continues to double down on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Katherine Hamilton is a political reporter for Breitbart News.
