Taking point on the hyperbolic North Korean response, dictator Kim Jong-un\u2019s sister Kim Yo-jong <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/04\/05\/kim-jong-uns-sister-threatens-nuke-south-korea\/\"><span>threatened<\/span><\/a><span> to attack Seoul with nuclear weapons on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>South Korea is long accustomed to belligerent rhetoric from the psychotic communist tyranny to its north, but the meeting with Sullivan suggests Yoon has real concerns about tensions escalating as he takes office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Speaking on behalf of the new South Korean president, Rep. Park Jin of Yoon\u2019s People Power Party \u2013 a leading candidate for foreign minister in the new administration \u2013 conducted the usual pleasantries at the White House before holding what he described as \u201cconsultations on ways to enhance the joint defense posture of South Korea and the U.S. and strengthen the U.S. extended deterrence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cDeploying strategic assets is an important part of strengthening extended deterrence as I said just now. You may understand South Korea and the U.S. discussed the issue today in that sense,\u201d Park said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220406000200325?section=nk\/nk\"><span>Yonhap News<\/span><\/a><span> noted \u201cstrategic assets\u201d is usually interpreted to mean \u201cformidable military hardware such as nuclear-powered submarines, aircraft carriers and long-range bombers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSouth Korea\u2019s defense ministry earlier said in a report to President-elect Yoon\u2019s transition team that it plans to hold discussions with the U.S. on the deployment of U.S. strategic assets to South Korea amid growing tensions with North Korea,\u201d Yonhap reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Park <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.hani.co.kr\/arti\/english_edition\/e_national\/1037823.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the White House agreed on \u201cthe importance of renewed consultative group activities for extended deterrence, which have not been functioning as they should.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Moon administration seemingly lost interest in some of the consultations Park referred to, preferring instead to pursue diplomacy with the North Korean regime. Yoon ran on a platform of getting tougher with Pyongyang after Moon\u2019s dovish strategy failed to produce significant results.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/03\/18\/south-korea-election-yoon-pyongyang\/\"><i><span>Foreign Policy<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>argued in March that Moon\u2019s administration fundamentally misunderstood the nature and objectives of the Kim regime, which wants to absorb or conquer South Korea under the guise of \u201creunification,\u201d not develop a sustainable peaceful relationship with Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYoon has promised \u2018strategic clarity\u2019 in declaring South Korea\u2019s pro-American stance on matters of U.S.-China relations. The president-elect has also spoken of the importance of liberal democracy and human rights in Seoul\u2019s foreign policy,\u201d <\/span><i><span>Foreign Policy <\/span><\/i><span>added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If Yoon is truly determined to stand up to China, his determination to secure more American strategic assets should give him an opportunity for defiance very soon. China is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/china-demands-halt-to-us-missile-shield-in-south-korea\/\"><span>reliably infuriated<\/span><\/a><span> by the deployment of such U.S. assets to South Korea, in part because the Chinese argue that advanced American sensor systems can see past North Korean territory and into China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yoon has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-skorea-seen-resuming-major-military-drills-nkorea-tensions-rise-2022-03-31\/\"><span>promised<\/span><\/a><span> to resume joint military drills with the United States after Moon reduced them to placate Pyongyang. In fact, Yoon reportedly wants to expand the drills to increase their deterrence value, possibly adding nuclear-capable bombers for the first time in five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Park did not directly address those reports at the White House, although he did suggest spring exercises could resume this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe agreed that what\u2019s most important is to maintain deterrence so that we can strongly respond to any possible North Korean provocations,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIssues related to North Korea\u2019s nuclear threats, economy security and many other challenges are being presented, and we want to take the comprehensive strategic alliance up a notch to handle these problems together,\u201d Park <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/m.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20220406000641\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A delegation representing South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol met with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Washington on Tuesday.
