Mary Cavanagh, 30, whose grandfather was a former mayor of Detroit, is facing a drunken-driving charge stemming from a February 25 incident in which police said she was swerving with two flat tires.<\/p>\n<p>The Michigan outlet Gongwer News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gongwer.com\/directories\/bio.cfm?nameid=426901\">broke<\/a> the story on April 1 \u2013 weeks after the alleged incident \u2013 which is how House Speaker James Wentworth (R-Farwell) first heard of the arrest, the <em>Detroit Free Press<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/04\/06\/redford-democrat-mary-cavanagh-accused-drunken-driving\/9473944002\/\">reported<\/a>. Wentworth has accused those who knew of \u201choping it would go away unnoticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Democrat from Redford has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, the <em>Free Press<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred in the early morning of February 25 when an officer said he heard \u201cthe thumping of tires\u201d near Merriman and Industrial Roads in Livonia, WDIV-TV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2022\/04\/06\/michigan-rep-mary-cavanagh-faces-drunken-driving-charge-following-arrest-in-livonia\/\">reported<\/a>. He encountered a Ford Escape with two flat tires on its driver\u2019s side and began following the SUV that eventually traveled onto I-96, where the driver started swerving, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>A police report said the front tire soon completely detached from the rim, causing Cavanagh to exit to the highway shortly after 2:30 a.m., the <em>Free Press<\/em> noted. The officer then turned on his emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop, WDIV-TV said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The outlet reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Cavanagh rifled through miscellaneous paperwork that didn\u2019t include her driver\u2019s license, the officer said. She said she was coming from the Livonia Democratic Party, but didn\u2019t know where that had been, according to the police report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Authorities said she continued to search her SUV for her license before going back to the paper she\u2019d originally searched. The officer asked if she knew what had happened to her tires, and she said she did not, the police report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">When asked again where she was traveling from, Cavanagh said\u00a0Lansing, according to the officer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">The report noted that Cavanagh underwent field sobriety tests and breath tests to gauge her blood alcohol level, but the results of both were redacted from the report, WDIV-TV said. After taking a preliminary breath test at the scene, Cavanagh was placed under arrest, the <em>Detroit News<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Her arraignment took place on March 24, and she had a pre-trial hearing set for Wednesday,\u00a0Livonia city attorney Paul Bernier told the Detroit News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">The outlet reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The February arrest marked the second time Livonia police had arrested Cavanagh on allegations that she was\u00a0driving under the influence, according to\u00a0Michigan State Police\u2019s ICHAT system.<\/p>\n<p>Cavanagh pleaded guilty to an ordinance violation of\u00a0operating while impaired after a May 2015 traffic stop in Livonia and received a year of probation, according to\u00a0the ICHAT report.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Cavanagh\u2019s grandfather, Jerome Cavanagh, served as Detroit\u2019s mayor from 1962 to 1970, while her father, Phil Cavanagh, was a state representative from 2011 to 2015, the <em>Free Press<\/em> reported. Mary Cavanagh was <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Mary_Cavanagh\">elected<\/a> in November 2020, and on February 2, 2022, she launched a committee for a state senate bid, the\u00a0<em>Detroit News<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Wentworth voiced his displeasure over learning of the arrest through the media.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cNobody ever admitted to what happened, hoping it would go away unnoticed. And unfortunately, that means everyone is still trying to figure it out,\u201d he said Monday, per the <em>Free Press<\/em>. \u201cThankfully, the Livonia Police were on alert and intervened before anything tragic happened.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that he hopes the House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (<\/span><span>Scio Township) \u201c<\/span><span>and the Democrat caucus didn\u2019t know and try to keep it under wraps.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEven if we have to step in as the legal process plays out, we will make sure the people of Michigan get the accountability they deserve,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lasinski also commented on Cavanagh\u2019s arrest but did not respond to Wentworth\u2019s statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cRep. Cavanagh is facing a serious charge,\u201d Lasinski said per the <em>Free Press<\/em>. \u201cOur priority is providing her with the support she needs to meet these challenges and stay healthy as the legal process proceeds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Michigan state Rep.
