Among the other measures being taken against Russia are greater sanctions on its financial institutions and state-owned enterprises, and sanctions on government officials and their family members, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Separately, the Treasury Department moved Tuesday to block any Russian government debt payments with U.S. dollars from accounts at U.S. financial institutions, making it harder for Russia to meet its financial obligations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lithuania on Monday announced that it will expel Russia\u2019s ambassador, close a Russian consulate, and recall its envoy in Moscow in reaction to increasing signs that Russian forces may have committed war crimes in Ukraine. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DJGRqojvH8\">https:\/\/t.co\/DJGRqojvH8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1511037130859970560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The European Commission\u2019s proposed ban on coal imports would be the first EU sanctions targeting Russia\u2019s lucrative energy industry over its war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the ban is worth 4 billion euros ($4.4 billion) per year and that the EU has already started working on additional sanctions, including on oil imports.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t mention natural gas, with consensus among the 27 EU countries on targeting the fuel used to generate electricity and heat homes difficult to secure amid opposition from gas-dependent members like Germany, the bloc\u00b4s largest economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>But European Council President Charles Michel said the bloc should keep up the pressure on the Kremlin, suggesting that an embargo on gas imports should also be required at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new package includes a ban on coal imports,\u201d Michel said on Wednesday. \u201cI think that measures on oil, and even gas, will also be needed, sooner or later.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Putin Attacks Petrodollar System, Demands \u2018Unfriendly\u2019 Nations Purchase Gas in Rubles<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FcoIBOCbhD\">https:\/\/t.co\/FcoIBOCbhD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1506979149881171971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new package of measures proposed by the commission also includes sanctions on more individuals and four key Russian banks, among them VTB, the second-largest Russian bank. The bloc also would ban Russian vessels and Russian-operated vessels from EU ports.<\/p>\n<p>Further targeted export bans, worth 10 billion euros, in sectors covering quantum computers, advanced semiconductors, sensitive machinery and transportation equipment also were proposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appreciate the strengthening of the 5th EU sanctions package: bans on Russian coal, vessels accessing EU ports, and road transport operators,\u201d Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter. \u201cBut it will take a gas\/oil embargo and de-SWIFTing of all Russian banks to stop Putin.
