Dick Durbin said Wednesday on the Senate floor that Democrats have unfairly handled some Republican Supreme Court nominees in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Durbin was discussing Republican criticism of Judge Ketanji Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/04\/ten-state-ags-sign-letter-opposing-ketanji-brown-jackson-scotus-nomination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jackson\u2019s<\/a> ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/22\/ketanji-brown-jackson-child-pornography-sentencing-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pattern<\/a> related to cases of child pornography, which was brought to light by Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley.<\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter thread, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/25\/associated-press-republicans-oppose-ketanji-brown-jackson-empathetic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hawley claimed<\/a> \u201cin every single child porn case for which we can find records, Judge Jackson deviated from the federal sentencing guidelines in favor of child porn offenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/22\/ketanji-brown-jackson-child-pornography-sentencing-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defended<\/a> her record, saying in an exchange with Durbin that \u201cas a mother and a judge who has had to deal with these cases, I was thinking that nothing could be further from the truth.\u201d Jackson also said Congress determines how judges are supposed to sentence and that judges must take into account several aspects of an offense before sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the notion that she\u2019s somehow, in the words of one Republican senator, \u2018her sentencing endangers children.\u2019 It\u2019s basically because he said as much in front of her family, and I thought about that, how painful that must have been for her to hear those words,\u201d Durbin said. \u201cThey\u2019re not true. And to take one or two situations,\u00a0each of them unique, in their factual circumstances and to generalize in terms of her position on an issue of that gravity, is fundamentally unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, we\u2019ve done it too on the Democratic side, and I\u2019m going to be first to admit as I look back in history, there are things that should\u2019ve been handled better when Republican nominees were before us,\u201d Durbin admitted. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/04\/susan-collins-votes-with-democrats-ketanji-brown-jackson-discharge-motion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Three Republicans Vote With Democrats In Preview Of Final Jackson Confirmation)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the majority of Republican senators in the Senate Judiciary Committee led by the ranking member, Chuck Grassley, I believe, were respectful and dealt with the judge in a fair manner, asked tough questions as they were expected to but did not cross the line into personal attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic West Virginia Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/29\/joe-manchin-flames-republicans-ketanji-brown-jackson-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Manchin<\/a> also criticized Republicans\u2019 handling of Jackson\u2019s confirmation hearing, telling CNN in March that Republicans\u2019 line of questioning was \u201cdisgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI listened to basically the hearings, and it was just embarrassing. It\u2019s not who we are. It\u2019s not what we were sent here to do, to attack other people and just try to tear them down. I won\u2019t be part of that.
