Trafficking convictions are usually turned into hefty prison sentences.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli Foreign Ministry said \u201cthe case is known and we are handling it through the consular service and our representatives in the Emirates.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Her brother, Khaled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium.HIGHLIGHT-uae-sentences-israeli-woman-to-death-for-drug-conviction-1.10721005?fbclid=IwAR1himBfO9IxCss4wY7ndS7NRQTlRkOTy8CHNdZCSP5IrEjNhFwwfPheo00\">told<\/a> <em>Haaretz<\/em>\u00a0his sister has gone on hunger strike in protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew nothing,\u201d he said. \u201cMassive forces of the local police raided her apartment, beat her and abused her. We knew of her arrest after she hadn\u2019t called mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khaled added that UAE authorities refuses to allow the family to\u00a0 see her.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The United Arab Emirates and Israel on Tuesday signed a visa waiver agreement, making the Gulf country the first Arab state that Israelis can travel to without a visa. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XFxM3ZEhbK\">https:\/\/t.co\/XFxM3ZEhbK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1319069825352781826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 22, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A senior Israeli official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium-israeli-on-uae-death-row-won-t-be-executed-official-says-no-diplomatic-crisis-1.10722286\">told<\/a> <em>Haaretz<\/em>\u00a0while Israel does not believe Kiwan\u2019s claims she was framed for drug smuggling, she will nevertheless not be executed but instead will serve a prison sentence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>According to the verdict, Kiwan was caught selling drugs to an undercover police officer, the report said. Three other people questioned by the local police told them they had bought drugs from her.<\/p>\n<p>Arab Israeli Knesset member and head of the\u00a0Joint List party Ayman Odeh called on Israeli\u00a0President Isaac Herzog and Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid to intervene on Kiwan\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working with every relevant official in order to cancel the sentence of Fida Kiwan and to save her life,\u201d Haaretz cited Odeh as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The case was not the first time the UAE has arrested an Israeli citizen on drug charges.\u00a0In October 2021,\u00a0 another Arab Israeli, Halil Dasuki, was arrested in Dubai after being suspected of planning to smuggle half a ton of cocaine into Israel via the UAE.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of Israelis have visited the UAE since the Trump-led Abraham Accords saw the two countries normalize ties in 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Arab Emirates has sentenced an Arab Israeli citizen to death\u00a0after she was convicted of possessing over one pound of cocaine, an accusation she denies.
