Russia and Ukraine dominate the sunflower oil industry, creating some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/war-in-ukraine-causing-shortage-of-sunflower-oil-32hsd9nlc\">80 per cent<\/a> of the world crop, and with the two nations at war supplies are dwindling to zero.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Sunflower oil is running out in the UK too, with the distributor responsible for around 75 per cent of the nation\u2019s supply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-60941091\">saying<\/a> that they simply cannot get the oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSunflower oil is a key ingredient and we are all looking at the scenario of not having it and how we will navigate the next few months,\u201d Hughes said. Other oils can be used for cooking and as\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/war-in-ukraine-causing-shortage-of-sunflower-oil-32hsd9nlc\">reports<\/a> companies are looking at changing processes and recipes to use them, but as Hughes noted,\u00a0\u201cit\u2019s difficult to beat the performance\u201d of sunflower oil for industrial food production.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, changing to another oil would reportedly not only likely result in a lesser crisp, but require the company to change all its packaging, resulting in \u201chuge financial pressures\u201d for the business.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It so happened that the food security of many countries depends on our supplies,&#8221; said Dmitry Medvedev, a top Russian security official and former Russian president. &#8220;It turns out that our food is our quiet weapon. Quiet but ominous.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9oziUaME7P\">https:\/\/t.co\/9oziUaME7P<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1510650835272822784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Potato chips are far from the only food likely to be affected by supply shortages however, with Germany\u2019s\u00a0Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/wirtschaft\/unternehmen\/suesswarenindustrie-warnt-wegen-ukrainekrieg-vor-leeren-regalen-a-c52e6ea2-cd9e-4bd9-a00d-6293c65fd62f\">warning<\/a> that supply problems will likely have a wide-reaching impact on the availability of other confectionaries, such as chocolate, biscuits and pretzel snacks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Difficulties surrounding the rising price of food as a result of inflation and supply chain disruption have already been hitting the German consumer, with supermarkets hiking prices by up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/04\/05\/german-supermarkets-substantially-raise-food-prices\/\">30 per cent<\/a> as a result, but these issues look like they may soon get even worse regarding the production of snack foods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with the corona pandemic, energy, agricultural raw materials, packaging, but also transport have become massively expensive,\u201d the organisation told\u00a0<em>Der Spiegel<\/em>, but noted that with the Ukraine Crisis, the issue was now \u201clife-threatening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While the increased costs of raw ingredients\u2013 such as wheat \u2014 are said to have had a significant negative effect on the industry, the BDSI expressed particular concern regarding shortages in the supply of natural gas, with Vladimir Putin\u2019s Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/24\/putin-attacks-petrodollar-system-demands-unfriendly-european-nations-purchase-gas-in-rubles\/\">threatening<\/a> on and off to cut off European nations from Russian sources.<\/p>\n<p>An interruption in the supply of gas to manufacturers \u2014 used to heat industrial ovens and cookers \u2014 according to the\u00a0<em>Der Spiegel<\/em> report, would result in the industry coming to a complete standstill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe companies in the German confectionery industry produce food and are therefore of outstanding importance for supplying the population in Germany, especially in emergency and bottleneck situations,\u201d BDSI Chairman\u00a0Bastian Fassin is reported as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with politicians and the food trade, we must ensure that supermarket shelves do not remain empty,\u201d he is also reported as saying. \u201cPoliticians must now examine all measures that help food manufacturers to continue producing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These supply crises are already being felt in Europe. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/04\/05\/german-supermarkets-substantially-raise-food-prices\/\">reported<\/a> by Breitbart, several German supermarkets enacted massive price hikes overnight this week to reflect shortages, with some products rising in price by 50 per cent in one day.
