Can Tesla run on Autopilot?\u201d that quoted various critics slamming him for being stretched too thin, Musk <a href=\"denied:applewebdata:\/\/329b7bee-12da-4206-994f-fb53bd9a3180\/v\">fired back<\/a> at the Post and ostensibly its owner\u00a0 Bezos, snapping, \u201cGive my regards to your puppet master.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The profile had stated that Musk \u201cis drowning in outside commitments like his aerospace company and other endeavors while letting quality \u2013 and strategy \u2013 at Tesla fall victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author of the Tuesday opinion piece that triggered Musk\u2019s \u201calways good for a laugh\u201d response, Timothy L. O\u2019Brien, a senior columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, wrote derisively, \u201cElon Musk just bought a $3 billion stake in Twitter Inc., because when you\u2019re the world\u2019s richest human you can toss billions around like poker chips. This may be just another piece of performance art from Musk \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien then sniped, \u201cSo maybe we should take Musk\u2019s Twitter investment as more of the same from the guy who has pondered the meaning of life while sipping whiskey and smoking weed during a podcast and once mysteriously claimed he had \u2018funding secured\u2019 to take Tesla Inc. private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he confessed his real fear: \u201cBut I suspect there\u2019s something more serious informing Musk\u2019s decision to invest in Twitter, even if he revels in buffoonery: Maybe he wants to bring Twitter to heel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien noted the poll Musk issued on Twitter that asked, \u201cFree speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?\u201d O\u2019Brien also pointed out that Musk followed one day later by asking, \u201cGiven that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done? \u2026 Is a new platform needed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne explanation for Musk\u2019s sensitivity might be found in his libertarian leanings,\u201d O\u2019Brien surmised. \u201cBelated efforts by social media platforms to constrain some of the most virulent forms of political propaganda have raised the hackles of that crowd (along with far-rightists and Trumpistas).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien concluded, \u201cMusk probably isn\u2019t in this for the money. He\u2019s in it to make a point. And he\u2019s in it to scare Twitter\u2019s management. Somebody who has complained that his free speech is being \u2018chilled\u2019 should, perhaps, be sensitive to those nuances.
