On Tuesday, <\/span><span>Abdul-Jabbar apologized, saying he never intended to criticize the Los Angeles Lakers star.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll I have to say is this: I was there to give Carmelo Anthony the Social Justice Champion Award. I\u2019ve been talking to the press since high school. That\u2019s 60 years of making statements. And I haven\u2019t always gotten it right. And Sunday was one of those nights,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar said on Sirius XM NBA radio Tuesday, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/story\/2022-04-05\/kareem-abdul-jabbar-apologizes-to-lebron-james-for-critical-comments\"><span>Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t my intention to criticize LeBron in any way,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar continued. \u201cHe\u2019s done so much for the black community as well as for the game of basketball. We may not always agree, but I want to whole-heartedly apologize to LeBron and make it clear to him that I have tremendous respect for him. If he can accept that, I\u2019ll be very happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Sunday, Abdul-Jabbar took aim at James, saying that some of James\u2019 past actions have been \u201cbeneath him.\u201d <\/span><span>The comments were made to reporters prior to the Lakers versus Denver Nuggets game that day, as he presented Carmelo Anthony with the NBA\u2019s Social Justice Champion trophy for the 2020-2021 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSome of the things he\u2019s done and said are really beneath him, as far as I can see,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar said according to ESPN. \u201cSome of the great things that he\u2019s done, he\u2019s standing on both sides of the fence almost, you know? It makes it hard for me to accept that when he\u2019s committed himself to a different take on everything. It\u2019s hard to figure out where he\u2019s standing. You\u2019ve got to check him out every time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Abdul-Jabbar gave credit to James for the work he\u2019s done off of the court, such as providing a path for kids to attend college, but he reiterated that he has not been pleased with some of the things James has done, while also saying that he\u2019d love to speak with James about social issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t mind doing it if he would take the time. I definitely got the time,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/lakers\/story\/2022-04-03\/kareem-abdul-jabbar-criticizes-lebron-james-actions-beneath-him\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>, according to the L.A. Times. \u201cI admire the things that he\u2019s done that have gotten all our attention. Sending a whole school to college? Wow. That\u2019s amazing. His thoughtfulness and willingness to back it up with his wallet, you got to give him credit for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo I\u2019m not throwing stones,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar continued. \u201cI just wish he wouldn\u2019t \u2014 you know, some of the things he\u2019s done, he should be embarrassed about. That\u2019s just where I\u2019m coming from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s not the first time that Abdul-Jabbar, a six-time NBA champion, has criticized James. Abdul-Jabbar ripped James in December for posting a meme to social media which appeared to question COVID-19, seemingly comparing it to the cold and the flu. Abdul-Jabbar responded by penning a letter to James, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kareem.substack.com\/p\/dear-lebron-heres-the-covid-19-help\"><span>titled<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cDear LeBron: Here\u2019s the COVID-19 Help You Requested in Your Spider-Man Meme.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the letter, Abdul-Jabbar accused James of giving \u201csupport to those not getting vaccinated, which makes the situation for all of us worse by postponing our health and economic recovery.\u201d Kareem referenced James\u2019 106 million followers on Instagram, saying that the number of people who follow James makes his post \u201cpolitically impactful.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
