I look forward to our collective efforts to position CDC, and the public health community, for greatest success in the future,&#8217;\u201d the paper said.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>The CDC has been criticized for its slow initial response to the pandemic, then for confusing guidance on masking, isolation, and quarantine, as well as booster shots. For instance, late last month, the CDC recommended booster shots for those 50 years old and older, while many other experts say they\u2019re not necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cToday, CDC expanded eligibility for an additional booster dose for certain individuals who may be at higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19,\u201d Walensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0328-covid-19-boosters.html\">said<\/a> on March 29. \u201cBoosters are safe, and people over the age of 50 can now get an additional booster 4 months after their prior dose to increase their protection further. This is especially important for those 65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19 as they are the most likely to benefit from receiving an additional booster dose at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>But some experts said a fourth shot isn\u2019t necessary, prompting a commentary piece by the Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/you-likely-dont-need-a-fourth-covid-shot-booster-dose-pfizer-moderna-vaccine-omicron-ba-2-ba2-11648498217\">headlined<\/a>, \u201cYou Likely Don\u2019t Need a Fourth Covid Shot.\u201d Then the Food and Drug Administration came out and said it will authorize \u2014 but not recommend \u2014 a fourth shot for patients over 50. The CDC, meanwhile, does recommend the second booster, CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/29\/fda-authorizes-fourth-pfizer-covid-vaccine-dose-for-people-age-50-and-older-.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>With confusing info out there, some Americans didn\u2019t know what to do, the Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/04\/02\/fourth-booster-shot-confusion\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teaser-content\">\n<section>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201c[T]his time around, the federal government offered little detailed guidance about who should get the additional dose and when. Instead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0328-covid-19-boosters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0immunocompromised and older Americans\u00a0<i>could\u00a0<\/i>get a second booster while stopping short of recommending they do so \u2014 a change from some previous decisions regarding coronavirus vaccines.
