against Hungary after Viktor Orb\u00e1n achieved a landslide victory in the country\u2019s recent general election.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the European Union is not happy with the result of Hungary\u2019s recent general election, with many in Brussels seemingly hoping the country\u2019s united opposition would manage to unseat long-running conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, after Orb\u00e1n\u2019s recent landslide victory, the EU looks set to take a different approach to tackling the populist administration.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2022\/04\/05\/watch-live-ukraine-likely-to-overshadow-vdl-s-address-to-meps-on-bloc-s-political-prioriti\">report<\/a> by Euronews, the European Commission has triggered the so-called \u201cconditionality mechanism\u201d over what are alleged to be Hungarian breaches of EU law.<\/p>\n<p>The move \u2014 which had only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/poland-hungary-risk-funding-slashes-after-eu-rule-of-law-decision\/\">recently<\/a> been ruled legal by a European court \u2014 opens up the eastern-European country to economic sanctions, allowing the EU to freeze funding sent to the eastern European country, which reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/ausland\/eu-kommission-wendet-rechtsstaatsmechanismus-gegen-ungarn-an-a-2037a0e9-fc1e-4163-a0f7-9ba259c74013\">amounts<\/a>\u00a0currently to around five billion euros per anum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>While the exact reasons for the triggering of the mechanism were not given, the commission has previously repeatedly targeted Hungary over alleged \u201ccorruption\u201d regarding its judiciary, with many in Europe also taking issue with the Conservative cultural dominance in its national media.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Orb\u00e1n hailed the triumph over \u201cthe left at home, the international left all around, the Brussels bureaucrats, the Soros empire with all its money, the international mainstream media, and in the end, even the Ukrainian president\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5qQQZZ5QZ7\">https:\/\/t.co\/5qQQZZ5QZ7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a targets for the rules by the EU before the Ukraine crisis kicked off again in late February, with the bloc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/poland-hungary-risk-funding-slashes-after-eu-rule-of-law-decision\/\">accusing<\/a> both countries of democratic shortcomings not in keeping with European values.<\/p>\n<p>Post-Russia\u2019s renewed invasion of Ukraine, it seems Hungary has become the prime internal target for Brussels\u2019 wrath, with Orb\u00e1n\u2019s administration being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/apr\/04\/victory-of-putin-ally-orban-in-hungary-may-trigger-freeze-on-eu-funding\">accused<\/a> of unfairly tipping the scales of the election via the cultural capital conservatives have in Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>The sentiment that the Hungarian administration should be punished for perceived transgressions against the European order appears to be common amongst union elites, with\u00a0some within the EU cheering on the possibility of sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The EU Commission] finally takes action [against] Hungary within the rule of law mechanism,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RamonaStrugariu\/status\/1511354415785127936\">wrote<\/a> Romanian MEP\u00a0Ramona Strugariu online. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Hungarian PM Orb\u00e1n to pay for all the violations of democracy, [Human Rights] and [Rule of Law].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others meanwhile have attacked Orb\u00e1n over his alleged friendliness towards Vladimir Putin, with the Prime Minister having found himself repeatedly at loggerheads with Ukrainian President\u00a0Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungary must choose its side, and whether they belong to the EU and Nato,\u201d said Czech foreign minister\u00a0Jan Lipavsk\u1ef7, noting that he was \u201cnot satisfied with the election\u2019s result in Hungary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are facing existential issues,\u201d\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em> meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/apr\/04\/victory-of-putin-ally-orban-in-hungary-may-trigger-freeze-on-eu-funding\">reports<\/a> Finnish MEP\u00a0Petri Sarvamaa as saying. \u201cThese are totalitarian authoritarian regimes vis-a-vis the democratic world and Orb\u00e1n seems to be willing to be part of that [first] camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"western\"><em><span>Follow
