The institute has produced two surveillance and two attack drone prototypes so far, but none of the designs has been commissioned for production.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18804602\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/11\/wi\/afp\/18\/president-tsai-ing-wen-is-loathed-by-beijing-taiwan-an-sovereign-nation-of.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (AFP\/Sam Yeh)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Taiwanese Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/military\/article\/3172582\/taiwan-appoints-working-group-study-ukraine-war-tactics-against?module=inline&#038;pgtype=article\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> last week that a working group to study Ukrainian tactics against Russia has been established, with input from several friendly foreign governments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cWe will not make remarks rashly, but through internal discussions which are important, to get results that are helpful for building armaments and preparing for war,\u201d Chiu said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese analysts doubted Taiwan could surpass China\u2019s formidable edge in both quality and quantity of drones, but Taiwan\u2019s drone boosters argued the island has defensive geographic advantages that could be amplified by well-designed targeting and attack drones, even if China\u2019s fleet remains larger and more advanced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The RAND Corporation published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidhambling\/2021\/09\/21\/low-tech-targeting-mesh-drones-could-tip-the-odds-against-a-chinese-fleet-invading-taiwan\/?sh=11e4947e4b45\"><span>white paper<\/span><\/a><span> last year suggesting Taiwan could benefit from a \u201cmesh\u201d of several thousand targeting drones with overlapping fields of view, linked together with a militarized version of 5G wireless networking. Such a system would help Taiwan\u2019s missiles seek out high-value invading targets and strike at their most vulnerable locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The RAND proposal required no new technologies, and the drones would be small and inexpensive, overwhelming the Chinese invasion force with so many targets that shooting them all down would be impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another strategy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.stuff.co.nz\/details\/_6107764773001?linkId=95364807\"><span>considered<\/span><\/a><span> by Taiwan involves \u201csuicide drones,\u201d specially designed to seek out and destroy Chinese radar systems. The suicide drone concept would work around Taiwan\u2019s lack of expertise by designing missile release systems, frequently cited by analysts as a major obstacle to the island\u2019s drone ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Taiwanese media last year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2021\/10\/how-uavs-could-spark-a-military-conflict-in-the-taiwan-strait\/\"><span>suggested<\/span><\/a><span> creating a fleet of interceptor drones that could be dispatched when China conducts its frequent excursions into Taiwan\u2019s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
