He described the people he\u2019s been talking to, many of whom do not have power and are \u201cdesperate\u201d and \u201csuffering.\u201d He explained how almost every major city in Texas would see sub-zero temperatures on Tuesday night, \u201cand many of them will not have electricity, power, or in many instances, water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/539147-beto-orourke-we-are-nearing-a-failed-state-in-texas-due-to-republican-leaders\">The Hill<\/a> reported on Wednesday,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cSeveral people have died and tens of thousands have been left in the dark and cold since Sunday evening after a winter storm moved through a large swath of the state earlier this week.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke said that \u201cfar too many have died already,\u201d adding that he is afraid of what will happen in the next twenty-four hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo much of this was avoidable,\u201d O\u2019Rourke said during the appearance. \u201cGoing back to the deregulation of our electricity grid here in Texas, which has created an incentive to actually not weatherize or protect against these events.\u201d He claimed that this deregulation has allowed for plants to be shut down, providing opportunities for some to profit off of the increase in energy and electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cAnd then you have the cascading consequences of these stupid culture battles that are led by the GOP and our Governor Greg Abbott.\u201d He said that while there are emergencies taking place, the focus has been on efforts like making Texas \u201ca sanctuary state for the NRA,\u201d debates over \u201cbathroom bills,\u201d or Mark Cuban\u2019s decision not to play the national anthem at Dallas Mavericks games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-nba-derails-mark-cuban-plans-to-banish-anthem-from-dallas-nba-games\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported on the Dallas Mavericks story, noting that the attempt to ban the anthem was not successful.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, NBA Chief Communications Officer Mike Bass said the league will play the anthem before games as they start to welcome back fans. Stadiums and arenas have generally been empty or limited across professional sports due to coronavirus precautions.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2018, when O\u2019Rourke was running for a senate seat against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), he commented on the actions of players taking a knee during the national anthem at sports games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/early-lead\/wp\/2018\/08\/22\/trump-slams-espn-nfl-players-as-texas-senate-candidate-beto-orourke-defends-peaceful-protest\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported at the time,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Replying to a question about player protests during a recent campaign stop, O\u2019Rourke said that he \u201ccan think of nothing more American\u201d than \u201cto peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Tuesday, he expressed his disapproval that attention has been on these cultural debates and \u201cother kinds of stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe energy capital of North America cannot provide the energy needed to warm and power people\u2019s homes in this great state,\u201d O\u2019Rourke continued. \u201cWe are nearing a failed state in Texas. And it has nothing to do with God or natural disasters. It has everything to do with the leadership and those in positions of public trust who have failed us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke went on to describe Governor Abbott\u2019s recent State of the State speech and the five priorities he laid out.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cNowhere mentioned in those top five priorities was Covid, or the vaccination rollout,\u201d or the need for protection against natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-delivers-2021-state-of-the-state-address\">text<\/a> of Governor Abbott\u2019s prepared remarks for his 2021 State of the State Address, however, shows that he mentioned \u201cCovid\u201d several times, including the discussion of a nurse who \u201cvolunteered to be on the frontline in the hospital\u2019s Covid unit.\u201d The governor also added, \u201cIf we are going to fully address COVID-related health issues, we must also focus on the mental health challenges that Texans are facing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke claimed that the Governor\u2019s speech focused on less pressing topics, such as election fraud, which O\u2019Rourke claims is not an issue in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke discussed climate change, and \u201cthe changing in the frequency and severity of natural disasters,\u201d saying \u201cwe know this stuff is coming.
