\u2018regressed\u2019 during periods of COVID lockdown, according to a government report.<\/p>\n<p>Children in the UK have faced \u2018delayed\u2019 development as a result of harsh COVID restrictions, while others even saw their development regress during periods of lockdown, a government report has found.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The findings match up with those from other studies conducted in other parts of the world, with one study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/16\/reading-ability-of-children-far-lower-than-in-pre-covid-times-study\/\">Germany<\/a> finding that the reading ability of 4th graders had fallen significantly since before the Chinese Coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/strong-signs-of-recovery-across-education-but-challenges-remain\">According<\/a> to the report by UK education ministry Ofsted, young children have been most affected by coronavirus restrictions, with their development being delayed and even regressing in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s report finds that the pandemic has continued to affect young children\u2019s communication and language development, with many providers noticing delays in speech and language,\u201d the report reads. \u201cOthers said babies have struggled to respond to basic facial expressions, which may be due to reduced social interaction during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere continues to be an impact on children\u2019s physical development, including delays in babies learning to crawl and walk,\u201d the report continues. \u201cSome providers reported that children had regressed in their independence and self-care skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also notes that many children seemed to have suffered setbacks in their emotional development, with many lacking the confidence to properly engage in social or group activities.<\/p>\n<p>More bizarre side effects of lockdowns have also appeared to have cropped up in Britain\u2019s youth, with one nursery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/education-60981450\">reportedly<\/a> claiming that some children were gaining the accents of the cartoon characters they spent time watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026it\u2019s clear that the pandemic has created some lingering challenges,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/strong-signs-of-recovery-across-education-but-challenges-remain\">said<\/a> Ofsted Chief Inspector\u00a0Amanda Spielman regarding the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m particularly worried about younger children\u2019s development, which, if left unaddressed, could potentially cause problems for primary schools down the line,\u201d research conducted in other parts of Europe into children\u2019s development post lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>One study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/16\/reading-ability-of-children-far-lower-than-in-pre-covid-times-study\/\">conducted<\/a> in Germany found that the reading ability of fourth-graders had collapsed when compared with pre-lockdown times, with one researcher saying that it was as if the children had lost roughly half a year\u2019s worth of development.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/02\/study-more-than-33-of-children-who-started-school-during-coronavirus-need-intensive-reading-intervention\/\">study<\/a> conducted within the United States found that around a third of kindergarteners were struggling to read at the expected level for their grade, and as such require \u201cintensive\u201d intervention to get back on track.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it appears that there is a consensus among experts that the periods of on-and-off lockdowns globally have had a significant negative effect on children, with the\u00a0United Nations Children\u2019s Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/education\/2022\/01\/26\/unicef-school-shutdowns-causing-nearly-insurmountable-education-losses-children\/\">warning<\/a> that the educational gap caused by school closures would be difficult to close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the disruptions to learning must end, just reopening schools is not enough,\u201d said the group\u2019s chief of education,\u00a0Robert Jenkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents need intensive support to recover lost education,\u201d he continued. \u201cSchools must also go beyond places of learning to rebuild children\u2019s mental and
