Even those who moderately follow the diet may have a 35 percent reduced risk for the disease, the authors note. Still, following it closely has an upside: It\u2019s comparable to being 7.5 years younger cognitively than people who don\u2019t follow the diet diligently, according to a June 2015 study published in <em>Alzheimer\u2019s &#038; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/em>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4581900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to reducing the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, the MIND diet can also reduce the risk of Parkinson\u2019s disease. A 2018 study published in <em>The Journal of Nutrition, Health, and Aging <\/em>found this way of eating cut the risk and delayed the progression of the disease among older people. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6436549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Because this diet is a hybrid of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, you may also experience health benefits associated with these particular diets.<\/p>\n<p>The DASH diet has been linked to reductions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/high-blood-pressure\/guide\/\" data-gd-wrapped=\"\">hypertension<\/a>, thereby diminishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/stroke\/guide\/symptoms\/\" data-gd-wrapped=\"\">risk of stroke<\/a> and heart attack, according to the Mayo Clinic. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/dash-diet\/art-20048456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">9<\/a>) The National Institutes of Health have also endorsed the plan for heart health, as has <em>U.S. News &#038; World Report<\/em>, which releases annual rankings on the best popular diets. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/files\/docs\/public\/heart\/hbp_low.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/best-diet\/best-diets-overall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">11<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Mediterranean diet is a popular plan touted by dietitians, and for good reason: A study published in the July\u2013August 2015 issue of <em>Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases<\/em> linked the approach to improvements in blood pressure, a reduced risk of heart disease, and better insulin sensitivity. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0033062015000286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12<\/a>) That makes it a plus for anyone at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-disease\/\" data-gd-wrapped=\"\">risk of heart disease<\/a> or anyone managing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/type-2-diabetes\/guide\/prediabetes\/\" data-gd-wrapped=\"\">prediabetes<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>The only known disadvantage of the MIND diet (if you even want to call it a disadvantage) is that it requires patience, effort, and careful meal planning to ensure you\u2019re consuming the right amount of food servings according to the diet\u2019s guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>To stay committed to the goal, come up with an accountability system and plan out all your meals for the week \u2014 breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
