But one group that has stayed true to their roots, and just celebrated a decade since their first album, is The Lumineers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so thankful for the journey we\u2019ve been on, and how we\u2019ve been able to keep the music alive all of these years,\u201d the band wrote on Instagram. The Lumineers have kept their music alive by keeping it consistent, while many other artists are falling ill with the ravenous desire to be trendy.<\/p>\n<p>While Puth started his career with heartfelt and beautifully melodic songs like \u201cSee You Again\u201d with Wiz Khalifa, his latest hit \u201cLight Switch\u201d is just another catchy pop song. Even worse, it\u2019s just another TikTok song.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to literally switch things up, Puth took a nosedive into TikTok, posting teasers for this single that sound nothing like his old music. The result is a shallow, cliche pop song only made famous by an algorithm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coldplay is another example of artists failing to reinvent themselves. Their 2008 \u201cViva La Vida\u201d and 2014 \u201cGhost Stories\u201d are remarkable albums. I still drive with my windows down to \u201cLife in Technicolor,\u201d \u201cLovers in Japan,\u201d and \u201cStrawberry Swing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because these albums string together beautiful narratives and offer genuine, authentic music. Best of all, the lyrics are all still current and the songs will never age out.\u00a0But their 2021 album \u201cMusic of the Spheres\u201d is far from a masterpiece. It\u2019s too exotic, over-the-top, and predictable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alicia Keys\u2019s latest album, \u201cKeys,\u201d is another travesty. It\u2019s a two-disc set of new music that\u2019s \u201cremixed\u201d on the other side of the record. Keys has been a chart-topping A-list artist since she was 20 years old, winning 15 Grammys, hosting multiple awards shows, and judging on \u201cThe Voice,\u201d but she still feels the need to do something new.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A handful of songs on \u201cKeys\u201d remind us of her good old days, but the choruses are once again overly predictable, not clever or tasteful. This album isn\u2019t just two for the price of one \u2014 it\u2019s more than an hour and a half of music to listen to, and the electric-remixed songs are not worth the listen at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, artists eventually have two options: go deep, or go wide. They can either delve into and master their particular genre and voice, or they can try to reinvent themselves and do something splashy and \u201cnew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the budding \u2014 and aging \u2014 artists: You don\u2019t need to outdo timeless classics with something spunky and fresh. You\u2019ll only end up hurting yourself in the end.\u00a0It\u2019s okay to produce music that\u2019s not as grand as past hits. That\u2019s exactly what The Lumineers have done and they\u2019re not worse because of it.<\/p>\n<p>The Lumineers\u2019 latest release, \u201cBrightside,\u201d features just nine songs and 30 minutes of music, but this short album feels more like a familiar cup of tea rather than a quick shot of some new espresso.\u00a0The new collection doesn\u2019t measure up to The Lumineers\u2019 previous musical masterpieces, such as \u201cCleopatra\u201d and \u201cIII,\u201d but it was never meant to outshine them with out-of-the-park tunes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though the band was more emotional with their lyrics on this album, it\u2019s undeniable that \u2018Brightside\u2019 is not their best album,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepostathens.com\/article\/2022\/01\/lumineers-album-review-brightside\">said<\/a> Logan Humphrey on The Post. Although Humphrey\u2019s claim sounds more like a diss, it\u2019s revealing of The Lumineers\u2019 honorable music mindset. In \u201cBrightside,\u201d they weren\u2019t concerned with trending tracks and topping charts. Instead, they\u2019ve given their audience music curated just for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Throughout all their discography, The Lumineers remain raw, clear, and intentional. Each song on \u201cBrightside\u201d is crafted with precise lyrics, soft sounds, and deliberate vocals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though some may argue that \u201cBrightside\u201d isn\u2019t as immersive as their 13-track \u201cIII,\u201d it\u2019s immersive in a much softer, more inclusive way. \u201cBrightside\u201d sounds as if we\u2019re sitting in a living room with Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, the founding members of the band.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA.M. Radio,\u201d the second track on the album, almost feels like a live cover \u2014 because that\u2019s what The Lumineers do. They\u2019re storytellers, singing for us and with us. These songs aren\u2019t intended to be one-hit wonders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cBig Shot,\u201d The Lumineers confirm this. Schultz sings out \u201cAnd you wanna be a big shot \/ You wanna be the big man.\u201d Apparently, he doesn\u2019t want to be the big shot, he just wants to keep singing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What truly stands out in \u201cBrightside\u201d is The Lumineers\u2019 presence in each song. Their personality and voice aren\u2019t lost in chintzy lyrics or new electronic rock beats.\u00a0Although this stripped-down folk-rock band didn\u2019t try to make a \u201cbig shot\u201d album, what matters is that they\u2019re staying true to what they know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some may be disappointed that this album isn\u2019t better than \u201cCleopatra,\u201d but that\u2019s not the point. The point is that The Lumineers are OK with not trending or stunning the audience with something different. They\u2019re simply concerned with creating art for their audience.
