That, he <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/judiciary\/3257164-bidens-absolute-defense-of-hunter-leaves-media-and-justice-department-in-a-muddle\/\">says<\/a>, suggests the need for a special counsel, free of political influence:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The point is that President Biden really did not have to ask: Hunter Biden had nothing to sell but influence. All President Biden had to do to facilitate such schemes was to be accessible \u2014 to allow his family to deliver face-to-face meetings and photo ops.<\/p>\n<p>And that brings us to the untenable position of [Attorney General Merrick] Garland.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to imagine a stronger case for a special counsel. Any effort to investigate Hunter Biden\u2019s dealings will lead investigators to encounter repeated references to the president and how he may have benefited from those schemes. At the same time, the president is \u201cabsolutely\u201d standing by his denial that his son did anything wrong or made any money from China.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Turley has also pointed to statements by President Biden, reported recently by the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, that President Biden wants Garland to be more aggressive in pursing Trump.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">From NYT: Biden has told confidants he believes Trump is &#8216;a threat to democracy and should be prosecuted.&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y8J1BSCGxB\">https:\/\/t.co\/Y8J1BSCGxB<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QVV3e6xlmV\">pic.twitter.com\/QVV3e6xlmV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Byron York (@ByronYork) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByronYork\/status\/1510373746053419010?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese are statements made to aides that were then leaked to the media to get to Garland. That allows the media to say that Biden never said it directly to Garland, but the message was delivered by the media,\u201d Turley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JonathanTurley\/status\/1510604793219362825\">pointed out<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>That suggests the possibility of political influence on investigations \u2014 breaking a pledge by both Biden and Garland to keep the Department of Justice above politics, and throwing the Hunter Biden inquiry into doubt, absent a special counsel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
