five and 11-years old in England will be eligible to take a \u201clow-dose\u201d coronavirus vaccine despite the government acknowledging a low risk profile for youngsters dying from the Chinese virus.<\/p>\n<p>Starting on Monday, hundreds of sites across England will begin the rollout of jabs for five million children between five and 11-years-old, after previously limiting the vaccines to youngsters deemed to be at high risk or who live with vulnerable people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The deputy head of the National Health Service (NHS) vaccination drive, Dr Nikki Kanani,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/covid-19-vaccines-can-now-be-booked-for-children-aged-five-to-11-in-england-12580105\">told<\/a> Sky News that vaccines still\u00a0\u201cremain the best defence\u201d against the Wuhan virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy 13-year-old son has had his two vaccinations and I\u2019ll be booking my 10-year old daughter in for hers at the earliest opportunity,\u201d Dr Kanani vowed.<\/p>\n<p>Boris Johnson\u2019s government has admitted that otherwise healthy children are not at a high risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus, with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/covid-19-only-0-005-of-covid-infections-among-children-have-led-to-deaths-so-vaccine-would-have-to-be-very-low-risk-12351975\">studies<\/a> from last year suggesting a coronavirus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/aboutus\/transparencyandgovernance\/freedomofinformationfoi\/childdeathsandhospitalisationsinvolvingcovid19andchickenpox\">death toll<\/a> for them in the low single digits in England.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, it was decided to go ahead with extending the availability for parents or carers to vaccinate their children anyway, with the government arguing that the jabs should be considered safe in light of other countries using the vaccines on children, including the other British Home Nations of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Sajid Javid has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-60958507\">said<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c[c]hildren without underlying health conditions are at low risk of serious illness from Covid, and the priority remains for the NHS to offer vaccines and spring boosters to adults and vulnerable young people, as well as to catch up with other childhood immunisation programmes,\u201d however.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What Elites Committee on Vaccination\u00a0and Immunisation (JCVI) said that it could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/09\/13\/uk-government-approves-coronavirus-vaccines-for-12-to-15-year-olds\/\">not recommend<\/a> vaccinating young children, explaining that the \u201cmarginal\u201d benefits of giving children jabs were not enough to justify the \u201cpotential harms\u201d caused by the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the JCVI said at the time that it was not in the agency\u2019s \u201cremit\u201d to make the final decision, suggesting that the government must also consider the \u201csocietal\u201d impacts of the vaccine programme, such schools being able to reopen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>In February, the\u00a0JCVI updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/jcvi-updates-advice-on-vaccinations-for-5-to-11-age-group\">guidance<\/a>, saying: \u201cAlthough this age group is generally at very low risk of serious illness from the virus, a very small number of children who get infected do develop severe disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the JCVI recommended that the government should issue a \u201cnon-urgent\u201d call for children to be vaccinated with two doses of the\u00a0Pfizer-BioNTech paediatric vaccine, which has a lower strength than adult vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes amid record numbers of recorded coronavirus infections in the United Kingdom, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/bulletins\/coronaviruscovid19infectionsurveypilot\/1april2022\">estimated<\/a> 4.9 million believed to currently have the virus.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite the apparent record, deaths have still <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.data.gov.uk\/details\/deaths?areaType=overview&#038;areaName=United%20Kingdom\">remained well below<\/a> their peak.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"
