That&#8217;s an increase of more than 50% in the last five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These crimes are not only affecting businesses, but harming the entire community, according to Bradley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/apps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These crimes are not victimless,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In addition to the growing number of thefts that turn violent, innocent consumers, employees, local communities, and business owners and shareholders bear the costs of rising retail theft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, 25% of businesses raised prices in order to offset losses, according to Bradley. Some businesses were even forced to close in response to these crimes, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organization wants Congress to pass the &#8220;Integrity, Notification, and Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces for (INFORM) Consumers Act&#8221; to prevent stolen goods from being resold on online marketplaces.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline image-ct\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px) and (max-width: 1279px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/931\/523\/California-Retail-Theft.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p><span>San Francisco Police officers stand guard outside of the Nike store while shoppers search for Black Friday deals at Union Square in San Francisco, Calif. Friday, Nov. 26, 2021.\u00a0<\/span><span> (Jessica Christian\/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The legislation would &#8220;increase transparency and identity verification of high-volume third-party sellers in online retail marketplaces while protecting the privacy of small sellers,&#8221; according to Bradley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It would also help to &#8220;deter retail crime by closing off a prominent avenue by which criminals seek to profit by selling stolen goods,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/retail\/9-charged-in-organized-retail-thefts-throughout-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>9 CHARGED IN ORGANIZED RETAIL THEFTS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The advocacy group also said that the definition of organized retail theft should be updated and that the penalties against such criminals should be stricter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;States should act to define the crime of \u2018organized retail theft\u2019 in criminal law to specify those thefts involving two or more participants and an intention of resale and include increased penalties for those specific violations,&#8221; Bradley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A majority of states have also raised the thresholds for the value of stolen goods to trigger a felony charge, which &#8220;criminals are taking advantage of,&#8221; according to Bradley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;States should reconsider these thresholds and prosecutors should avoid adopting broad non-prosecution policies,&#8221; he argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are your FOX Business Flash top headlines for April 1.
