Ted Cruz sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin on Thursday asking for an oversight hearing into the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s (FBI) pattern of rule-breaking in sensitive investigations.<\/p>\n<p>The letter followed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/mar\/11\/fbi-audit-reveals-agents-rule-breaking-investigati\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audit<\/a> obtained by The Washington Times that noted FBI agents violated agency rules at least 747 times in 18 months while conducting investigations into politicians, political candidates, religious groups, and the news media.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz argued that these are exactly the types of sensitive investigations subject to meticulous compliance and oversight requirements to ensure the FBI avoided abusing its immense powers to engage in politically-motivated investigations. He claimed that the number and nature of the errors reported in the audit suggest a disturbing pattern of mismanagement, misconduct, and abuses within the FBI.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">RELEASE: Sen. Cruz Calls For Senate Judiciary Hearing on FBI Rule-Breaking in Sensitive Investigations<br \/>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6zl6iGmjCi\">https:\/\/t.co\/6zl6iGmjCi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTedCruz\/status\/1509714809402576903?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs the report details, of the 997 non-compliance errors made, 79% were substantial in nature, meaning they were \u2018of significance to the matter and\u2026more than a minor deviation from a \u2026 requirement.\u2019 Notably among those is the failure to obtain authorization in opening an investigation, which is \u2018about as radical as it gets.\u2019 Further, several portions of the audit, including those regarding investigative methods, search warrants, and recommendations were redacted, presumably to shelter the FBI from public criticism,\u201d Cruz wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/cruz_letter_to_durbin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am concerned about Director [Christopher] Wray\u2019s FBI and its pattern of stonewalling. For example, the FBI declined to provide responsive information regarding its 2016 probe of Concerned Women for America as requested by Chairman Grassley and similarly declined to provide simple answers in my recent questioning of Director Sanborne, regarding the FBI\u2019s degree of involvement in January 6<sup>th<\/sup>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz argued that the Senate should hear directly from Inspector General Michael Horowitz and FBI Director Wray regarding the audit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, therefore, call on [Durbin] to convene a full Committee hearing, or to the extent necessary, a closed hearing of the full Committee, to ensure transparency and accountability,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Times report on the audit explained that, \u201cThe FBI auditors reviewed a small portion of the bureau\u2019s portfolio.
