The plane is later seen on a street, apparently near the airport, where it was set on fire,\u201d the news agency detailed.<\/p>\n<p>Agape Flights, the missionary group that owned the doomed airplane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agapeflights.com\/\">confirmed<\/a> the incident in a statement posted on its website March 29.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The press release read, in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Rioting broke out in the Les Cayes, Haiti area on March 29, 2022, including the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the rioting, Agape\u2019s Chieftain aircraft has been destroyed, but our team on the ground is safe. We are preparing to bring them back to the U.S. safely.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rioting broke out in the Les Cayes, Haiti area today, including the airport.<br \/>Agape\u2019s Chieftain aircraft has been destroyed, but our team on the ground is safe. Our missionary affiliates are hearing that they thought it was a politicians plane.  Updates on <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gdChiEwEzu\">https:\/\/t.co\/gdChiEwEzu<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HK4UWFkNik\">pic.twitter.com\/HK4UWFkNik<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Agape Flights (@AgapeFlights) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AgapeFlights\/status\/1508896952972460032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Agape Flights is an organization based in Venice, Florida, that delivers mail and humanitarian aid to impoverished Caribbean island nations such as Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>The organization attempted to provide some context for the attack on its airplane by a group of unidentified Haitians on March 29 in the statement shared by its website on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Agape Flights wrote:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Here is a quote from a missionary update that helps \u201cexplain\u201d a bit: \u201cPeople are mad that the roads are blocked by gangs, and the only way to travel to the Southern part of the country is via air. They assume the airlines control the gangs and are profiting off of the insecurities. Agape\u2019s plane, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are also hearing that they thought it was a politician\u2019s plane.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The background information provided by Agape Flights remains unconfirmed. Reuters reported on Tuesday it was \u201cnot immediately evident why the protesters had targeted the plane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrArielHenry\/status\/1508908959654154240?cxt=HHwWgMC4qYmt3PApAAAA\">condemned<\/a> the incident in a March 29 social media\u00a0post shared by his Twitter account.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>An English translation of Henry\u2019s original French statement read:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I strongly condemn the violence by demonstrators which resulted in the burning of a plane at Les Cayes airport. (VALERIE BAERISWYL\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>At least one person was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/port-au-prince-haiti-gangs-6ea51fac57e25b0011a4c2f326f2b337\">killed<\/a> during the riot at Les Cayes airport on March 29, according to a March 30 report by the Associated Press (AP).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least one person died and five others were injured, including four police officers, in the confrontation between protesters and authorities in Les Cayes,\u201d Gedeon Chery, a Haitian National Police inspector assigned to the city\u2019s airport, told the news agency.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Chery said \u201cthe person killed was a protester who was shot\u201d but did not clarify who was responsible for the death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second small plane was burned at the local airport of the city of Jacmel, but it wasn\u2019t clear if it was also part of an attack by some protesters,\u201d Haitian National Police Spokesman Garry Desrosiers told the AP on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aircraft [in Jacmel city] was non-operational and had been stationed there for a while,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/americas\/haiti\">suffering<\/a> from a surge in crime, including\u00a0kidnappings, caused by upticks in domestic gang violence. The small island nation\u2019s\u00a0overcrowded prison system has contributed to Haiti\u2019s security deterioration in recent months, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaiti is facing a protracted political, constitutional, humanitarian, and security crisis,\u201d the organization states on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Ariel Henry has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2022\/01\/04\/haitian-prime-minister-says-survived-assassination-attempt\/\">ruled<\/a> Haiti since July 20, 2021, when he was sworn in as prime minister less than two weeks after Haiti\u2019s former president, Jovenel Mo\u00efse, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/jovenel-moise-haitis-embattled-president-killed-at-53\/\">assassinated<\/a>. Haitian government officials believe a foreign hit squad of at least 28 mercenaries, including former Colombian soldiers, were <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/07\/16\/haiti-assassination-colombia-us-military\/\">involved<\/a> in the killing of Mo\u00efse, 53, though much about the incident remains unconfirmed. Haitian security forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-57766749\">discovered<\/a> Mo\u00efse dead at his personal residence in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on July 7, 2021, with \u201c12 bullet wounds and a gouged eye.\u201d A Haitian state-backed investigation into the death remains ongoing after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/crime\/2021\/09\/15\/haiti-pm-fires-prosecutor-seeking-charges-against-him-in-moise-killing\/\">encountering<\/a> numerous roadblocks.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti continues to lack a president since Mo\u00efse\u2019s assassination. Henry was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/haiti-ariel-henry-sworn-in-as-new-prime-minister-13-days-after-assassination-of-president-jovenel-moise-12360280\">sworn in<\/a> as prime minister of Haiti on July 20, 2021, to replace then-Interim Haiti Prime Minister Claude Joseph.
