He has asked the state to allow him what he sincerely believes he needs to prepare for the end of this life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court has rightly ruled that the state did not meet the appropriately high bar the law sets to deny the condemned the accompaniment that their religion prescribes,\u201d they assert.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPermitting Mr. Ramirez\u2019s pastor to provide the spiritual assistance that Mr. Ramirez has requested would not render his execution a just act,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the matter of the Supreme Court ruling, the bishops also reiterate recent Church teaching against the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe practice of state-sanctioned executions of human beings \u2013 the irrevocable termination of God\u2019s gift of human life \u2013 is a grave violation of human dignity,\u201d they declare. \u201cAn execution represents a judgment by fallible human beings that a person is beyond redemption \u2013 a judgment the Catholic Church rejects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state should act with justice and mercy by sparing Mr. Ramirez\u2019s life,\u201d they continue. \u201cThe Supreme Court has done the right thing in its ruling to honor Mr. Ramirez\u2019s right to seek the mercy of God at the moment of his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tdwilliamsrome?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @tdwilliamsrome<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaders of the U.S. Bishops\u2019 Conference (USCCB) lauded the Supreme Court ruling permitting death row inmate John Ramirez to receive spiritual assistance prior to his execution.
