Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/10\/BB-scaled.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span>A nationwide surge in prices at the pump is leading more Americans to consider buying electric cars \u2014 a move favored by the Biden administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cars.com\/articles\/cars-com-reports-ev-searches-are-up-173-this-month-but-record-high-gas-prices-arent-yet-enough-for-mass-market-adoption-448207\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> from Cars.com \u2014 a company that gives car buyers \u201cdata, resources and digital tools needed to make informed buying decisions\u201d \u2014 the number of searches about electric vehicles on their platform has \u201cnearly doubled since last year,\u201d and \u201cincreased 173% from Feb. 24 to March 25.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe war in Ukraine, proposed infrastructure legislation, rising gas prices and supply-chain issues are just a few drivers of market volatility that have spurred consumer interest in EVs,\u201d explained the site. \u201cPerceived as a purchase that hedges against market swings, especially gas prices, EVs are gaining awareness and popularity, but actual purchases still lag due to extremely limited supply and several barriers to entry, with EVs constituting less than 1% of vehicles on the road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cars.com added that \u201c55% of non-EV owners indicate they are considering an EV for their next purchase, and more than two-thirds would consider switching to electric if gas prices keep rising.\u201d However, 52% of Americans consider cost to be a salient obstacle to buying an electric vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRecent macro events including historic inflation, rapidly rising gas prices, and debate over oil production and supply have transformed consumers\u2019 mere curiosity about EVs to an unprecedented level of interest,\u201d Cars.com editor-in-chief Jenni Newman said. \u201cAutomakers need to ramp up production, but until the supply-chain shortages level out, the extreme lack of available EVs can\u2019t keep up with the growing demand in the current market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Key White House officials have frequently called for American families to buy electric cars in reaction to rising gas prices \u2014 a trend that has marked the first year of President Joe Biden\u2019s tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In November, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/dem-lawmakers\/583325-buttigieg-electric-vehicle-owners-never-have-to-worry-about-gas-prices-again\/\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> that Americans who buy electric vehicles \u201cnever have to worry about gas prices again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income,\u201d Buttigieg said in comments made during an MSNBC interview. \u201cThey would gain the most by having that vehicle.
