Smith\u2019s reaction followed a joke from Rock about Jada Pinkett Smith\u2019s shaved head amid her hair loss battle, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/awards\/news\/will-smith-asked-to-leave-oscars-slap-chris-rock-1235219478\/\">reported<\/a> Variety in a piece published Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said there was some chaos after it happened and there were reportedly mixed messages about whether the \u201cKing Richard\u201d star was going to be asked to leave, between the Academy and the show\u2019s producer Will Packer, the outlet noted.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy\u2019s statement said that Smith was \u201casked to leave the ceremony and refused,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/will-smith-chris-rock-academy-disciplinary-proceedings-1235122743\/\">reported<\/a> The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sources say Will Smith was not formally asked to leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Oscars?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Oscars<\/a> after slapping Chris Rock, despite what the Academy claims. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HiGFH8LpT4\">https:\/\/t.co\/HiGFH8LpT4<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kAWHJlfirj\">pic.twitter.com\/kAWHJlfirj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Variety (@Variety) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Variety\/status\/1509566755378671619?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Variety <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/awards\/news\/will-smith-asked-to-leave-oscars-slap-chris-rock-1235219478\/\">reported<\/a> that the announcement from the Academy did not line up with what some sources with knowledge of the events say actually occurred.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>They claim that some Academy members expressed that they wanted Smith removed, but they also say that no formal or explicit ask was ever made. Another person familiar with the Academy said that Smith was asked to leave through an on-site representative. That call was made by Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, who, a source says, asked for Smith to leave the show instead of remaining in the auditorium for the rest of the telecast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Show producer Will Packer, sources inside the Dolby said, was the key to Smith remaining in his seat. In the roughly 30 minutes following Smith\u2019s attack on Rock, before the award for best actor was presented, Packer walked out into the orchestra and conferred with Smith, according to two witnesses. Packer said that he and the production \u201cofficially\u201d wanted Smith to stay for the remainder of the show, according to one of the witnesses. Another source close to Packer denied that the producer urged Smith to remain.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/academy-says-will-smith-was-asked-to-leave-the-ceremony-and-refused\">reported<\/a> by the Daily Wire, the Academy\u2019s lengthy statement called Smith\u2019s actions \u201ctraumatic,\u201d and admitted, despite asking him to leave, it could\u2019ve \u201chandled the situation differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Mr. Smith\u2019s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The academy closed out its statement by clarifying that the \u201cKing Richard\u201d star \u201cwas asked to leave the ceremony and refused,\u201d but added that it recognized they \u201ccould have handled the situation differently.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As the Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/will-smith-struck-chris-rock-in-the-face-at-oscars-after-he-cracked-a-joke-about-jada-pinkett-smiths-hair-loss\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>During a segment at the Oscars, the 57-year-old comedian remarked about how no one was wearing a mask in the theater before he turned his attention to Denzel Washington and praised him for his part in the movie \u201cThe Tragedy of MacBeth.\u201d The superstar comedian then spotted Will Smith\u2019s wife in the audience and cracked a joke about how Jada was going to be in the next \u201cG.I. Jane\u201d movie.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJada, I love ya,\u201d Rock said. \u201cG.I. Jane 2 movie, can\u2019t wait to see it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smith then got up from his seat and struck Rock in the face.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOh wow, wow. Will Smith just smacked the s*** outta me,\u201d Rock said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smith then repeatedly shouted, \u201cKeep my wife\u2019s name out your f***ing mouth!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWow, dude,\u201d Rock replied. \u201cIt was a G.I. Jane joke.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later in the show, the \u201cMen In Black\u201d star took the stage to accept his first Oscar ever for Best Actor for his role in the film \u201cKing Richard.\u201d During his acceptance speech, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/will-smith-issues-apology-to-chris-rock-says-he-was-out-of-line-and-wrong\">apologized<\/a> to the Academy and to the other nominees but didn\u2019t appear to apologize to Rock.
