I hope so,\u201d Jones replied with a laugh.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"aWnFgkqmSyKOws0M6X\"><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In addition to finding administrators skirting existing CRT laws, AIM\u2019s investigation also found that some schools are providing access to The New York Times\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/11\/8-more-big-takedowns-of-the-1619-project-for-its-one-year-anniversary\/\">historically inaccurate<\/a> \u201c1619 Project,\u201d which attempts to falsify American history. While unknowingly speaking with AIM, Cindy Dion, a district instructional coach for the Nampa School District, admitted that although schools can\u2019t teach material directly from the \u201c1619 Project\u201d itself, they can utilize concepts associated with it through an online educational database called Newsela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some really great free history resources out there,\u201d Dion said. \u201cThere\u2019s just a lot of pushback on [the \u20181619 Project\u2019]. So we\u2019ve had to say, right now we can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As detailed by Guillette, Newsela has become \u201canother Trojan horse that gets used to advance critical race theory,\u201d with the AIM president pointing to the company\u2019s statements on anti-racism and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Newsela\/status\/1271985711554707457?s=20&#038;t=SJb8rSLIrpK0mIaPtuPUUQ\">promotion<\/a> of Black Lives Matter content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Newsela, we\u2019re committed to advancing anti-racist practices in K-12 education,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsela.com\/about\/solutions\/anti-bias-anti-racist-instruction\/\">statement <\/a>on its website reads.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho is not the only red state where educators are attempting to go around existing anti-CRT laws, however. In Tennessee, several school administrators detailed to AIM how their districts are continuing to push their own agenda, despite Tennessee <a href=\"https:\/\/wapp.capitol.tn.gov\/apps\/BillInfo\/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HB0580\">banning<\/a> the teaching of CRT\u2019s main tenets in public education last year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis law was really well crafted and accomplishes nothing,\u201d said Todd Wigginton, the director of instruction for K-12 in Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). \u201cIt does not keep us from teaching the history \u2026 that\u2019s in the standards. So, basically, we\u2019re doing what we\u2019ve been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MNPS has since responded to the release of the video, saying it is a \u201cdisingenuous portrayal of an out of context clip of a longer conversation for a story based on a false premise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Wigginton was explaining that we did not teach \u2018prohibited concepts\u2019 before or after the law, so it has not had an impact on MNPS,\u201d the district said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/school-administrators-worm-around-laws-banning-critical-race-theory-undercover-videos-reveal\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWe are in compliance with the law and the rules adopted by the State Board of Education, and our educators teach the TN state standards using curricular materials approved by the State Board of Education.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"yOcKhQVYxCnIDSRJEW23kog5eX\"><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>AIM\u2019s investigation also included an interview with Kimberly Shurett, the director of early grades academic support on the Marion County Board of Education, who said in an apparent reference to CRT, that \u201c[i]t\u2019s not actively being taught but it\u2019s not actively\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0being taught.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not in this district,\u201d she later said in a separate clip. \u201cWe\u2019re business as usual in this district. And we don\u2019t \u2026 I love this. Like, we don\u2019t really let anybody tell us what to do if we don\u2019t believe in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While speaking with The Federalist, Guillette said that in order to combat curricula workarounds by public schools, the \u201cmost important and the most meaningful action [parents and state legislators] could take would be to focus on advancing school choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment schools are inherently broken in so many ways, and what we\u2019ve seen in a multitude of states is an endless game of Whack a Mole,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you banned critical race theory, they call it social and emotional learning. If you come after social and emotional learning, they call it mental health. If you ban the \u20181619 Project,\u2019 they bring in content from an innocuous-sounding news service called Newsela. The only solution is to offer choice to parents and to advance school choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guillette noted that while he\u2019s met with dozens of administrators who are \u201cnice people\u201d that mean well, \u201cwhat they view as best for your child might be dramatically different from what you view as what\u2019s best for your child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where things get terrifying,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Shawn Fleetwood is an intern at The Federalist and a senior at the University of Mary Washington.
