Hillary\u2019s campaign would pay $8,000, and the DNC will pay $105,000, a small sum for allegedly\u00a0\u201cmisreporting the purpose of certain disbursements\u201d related to the \u201cSteele dossier.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">Leading Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias, who played a key role in pushing for vote-by-mail across the nation during the 2020 election, and is supporting Democrats\u2019 efforts to gerrymander congressional district maps, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/clinton-campaign-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier\/2017\/10\/24\/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html\">revealed<\/a> in 2017 to have directed the spending on the dossier.<\/div>\n<p>The \u201cdossier\u201d was created by former British spy Christopher Steele with foreign sources, including sources allegedly very close to the Kremlin. The \u201cdossier\u201d was used as evidence to spy on Trump\u2019s campaign, though a Department of Justice Inspector General report said the FBI had\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/01\/30\/house-democrats-steele-dossier-was-ok-because-we-purchased-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0it to be false.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdossier\u201d\u00a0has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/01\/30\/house-democrats-steele-dossier-was-ok-because-we-purchased-it\/\">defended<\/a>\u00a0by Democrats as not being improper foreign interference in the 2016 election because Democrats \u201cpurchased\u201d it during the 2020 presidential campaign against Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>It appears the purchase of the \u201cdossier\u201d was illegally misreported, according to the FEC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph\">The dossier, leaked public by\u00a0BuzzFeed News in January 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/03\/30\/dnc-clinton-campaign-fine-dossier-spending-disclosure-00021910\">asserted<\/a> tons of false, inaccurate, \u201cunproven and sometimes salacious allegations about ties between Russia and Donald Trump, as well as others in his orbit,\u201d <em>Politico<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>DNC spokesperson Daniel Wessel told\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>\u00a0the organization and campaign do \u201cnot concede, but will not further contest the Commission\u2019s finding\u201d to save money on legal fees. \u201cWe settled aging and silly complaints from the 2016 election about \u2018purpose descriptions\u2019 in our FEC report,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump reacted to the fine on Wednesday with a celebratory press release. \u201cWow!
