His family\u2019s announcement that the \u201cDie Hard\u201d actor would be stepping back from acting as he battled aphasia, a cognitive condition that affects your ability to speak, was met with concern and sympathy from fans. Now some of Willis\u2019s former co-workers are coming forward to say they\u2019re not surprised at this turn of events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Directors, including Mike Burns (\u201cOut of Death\u201d) and Jesse V. Johnson (\u201cWhite Elephant\u201d), said they noticed Willis wasn\u2019t his usual self during recent projects. They said his lines had to be shortened and monologues eliminated because he couldn\u2019t remember what he was supposed to say. Sources claimed the \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d star had to wear an \u201cearwig\u201d device which would allow his lines to be delivered to him rather than memorized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Burns said he told the screenwriter that Willis\u2019s\u2019 part in \u201cOut of Death\u201d would need to be cut \u201cby about 5 pages,\u201d The Los Angeles Times <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-03-30\/bruce-willis-aphasia-memory-loss-cognitive-disorder\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI could see it firsthand and I realized that there was a bigger issue at stake here and why I had been asked to shorten his lines,\u201d Burns told the publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Burns said the incident made him hesitant to work with Willis in the future, but he did decide to sign on to direct \u201cWrong Place,\u201d despite being \u201cconcerned\u201d about the actor\u2019s health. The director said he was told Willis was \u201ca whole different person,\u201d and recalls how he noticed a decline when filming began in October 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI didn\u2019t think he was better; I thought he was worse,\u201d Burns recalled. \u201cAfter we finished, I said: \u2018I\u2019m done. I\u2019m not going to do any other Bruce Willis movies.\u2019 I am relieved that he is taking time off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Times apparently spoke with two dozen industry professionals who noticed long ago that something was off with Willis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Two insiders allege that on the set of \u201cHard Kill,\u201d Willis fired a gun that was loaded with a blank before reading the line that would have alerted his co-star what was happening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m supposed to think my life is about to end, and then my dad steps in to save the day,\u201d co-star Lala Kent told the Times, describing how her back was facing Willis in the scene. The actor was supposed to deliver a line that served as Kent\u2019s cue to duck before he fired the gun. Instead, he shot the gun before delivering the line, so Kent never ducked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause my back was to him, I wasn\u2019t aware of what was happening behind me. But the first time, it was like, \u2018No big deal, let\u2019s reset,\u2019\u201d Kent recalled. She said she asked director Matt Eskandari to remind Willis to say the line first before firing the gun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Crew members say the same thing happened a second time. Sources allege Kent was \u201cshaken\u201d and a crew member affirmed that Willis \u201cdid fire the gun on the wrong line.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe always made sure no one was in the line of fire when he was handling guns,\u201d one \u201cHard Kill\u201d alum said. Meanwhile, the film\u2019s armorer said the incident never happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The actor\u2019s family announced Willis was retiring from acting in a statement Wednesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBruce\u2019s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,\u201d the statement said.
