The governor can sign a bill making it illegal to acknowledge their existence, but he can\u2019t make them disappear with a pen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone seeking affirmation from the Buttigiegs should really reevaluate his life, but in any event, that Gov. Ron DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/29\/abc-news-doesnt-want-you-to-know-that-the-students-desantis-is-protecting-from-sex-propaganda-are-5-year-olds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed a bill<\/a> \u201cmaking it illegal to acknowledge\u201d that gay people exist is a \u2014 what\u2019s the word the media are typically so fond of? Oh, yeah\u2014\u00a0lie.<\/p>\n<p>Where\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/02\/washington-post-uses-debunked-reporting-to-issue-false-pro-pelosi-fact-check-and-bash-jim-jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glenn Kessler<\/a> when you need him? Correcting \u201cdisinformation\u201d is usually his thing.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone interested in reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/1557\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all seven pages<\/a> of the law signed Monday by DeSantis (referred to by some supporters as \u201cBig D\u201d), it has as much to do with being gay or transgender as it does with being heterosexual. Which is to say, it has nothing to do with any of those things.<\/p>\n<p>The entire text is more or less an affirmation of parental rights as to the educational development and well-being of children in public schools. For the most part, the law requires that schools fully inform parents about the emotional, psychological and physical health affairs of their kids; that schools make all student health records available to their respective parents; and that schools obtain permission from parents regarding matters related to their children\u2019s health and medical affairs.<\/p>\n<p>As background, the reason for the law is because <a href=\"https:\/\/tallahasseereports.com\/2021\/12\/02\/tallahassee-mom-gender-ideology-almost-destroyed-my-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a mom in Tallahassee<\/a> very recently was told by administrators at her young daughter\u2019s school that she could not view health records related to her own child, who was apparently expressing confusion about being female.<\/p>\n<p>The one line of text in the Florida law that has Chasten\u2019s chastity belt in a lock is where it states that school classroom instruction on matters related to \u201csexual orientation or gender identity\u201d be prohibited in grades kindergarten through third, and that it otherwise be age-appropriate. Specifically, it says: \u201cClassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leftists have disingenuously asserted that this would prohibit teachers, faculty, and students alike from any acknowledgment that perhaps a male teacher has a husband or that a little girl has two moms. One Florida-based male kindergarten teacher hilariously worried <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1508823367373279239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on MSNBC<\/a> that the new law means he would \u201chave to hide\u201d from his students that he and his partner \u201cwent paddle boarding this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unless this guy\u2019s \u201cpaddle boarding\u201d adventure means getting into the details of what it means to be gay, our maritime friend need not worry. Whether he and his partner went salsa dancing, rock climbing, or to one of Cher\u2019s eighth \u201cfarewell tour\u201d concerts, nothing in Florida\u2019s law says he can\u2019t chat with his students about how he spent his free time.<\/p>\n<p>The law is expressly meant to prohibit teachers in grades K-3 from discussing sex in the classroom. That would include explaining why certain people sleep with other people, and why some individuals believe they should have different genitalia than what they were born with.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of those grades, the law states that sex education be \u201cage appropriate,\u201d a matter that schools are instructed to settle on with their corresponding educational boards.<\/p>\n<p>Normal person: <em>So what\u2019s the problem?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For any reasonable person, this isn\u2019t controversial. Growing up in South Carolina, my district mandated that students had no sex education until fifth grade, and it was only after parents gave their written consent. What\u2019s more, I\u2019m gay and felt absolutely no need to say a word about it to my own nephew (let alone someone else\u2019s kid) until he was eight, and it was solely to answer why I don\u2019t have a wife: \u201cSome people have wives and some people have husbands.\u201d Anything else he wanted to know would be up to his parents to address. I\u2019ve never worried that this was a problem.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10651701\/New-poll-shows-52-likely-Democratic-voters-Florida-Dont-Say-Gay-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent survey<\/a> purported that a majority of Democratic voters in Florida support the law. Of course they do.
