While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently,\u201d it concluded.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith\u00a0for violations of\u00a0the Academy\u2019s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Consistent with the Academy\u2019s Standards of Conduct, as well as California law, Mr. Smith\u00a0is being provided at least 15 days\u2019 notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions, and the opportunity to be heard beforehand by means of a written response.\u00a0At the next board meeting\u00a0on April 18,\u00a0the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mr. Smith\u2019s actions at the 94<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <em>THR<\/em> awards columnist\u00a0Scott Feinberg, multiple members of the Academy expressed to him in private that they would like to see Will Smith\u2019s membership suspended in light of the organization\u2019s\u00a0Standards of Conduct that was implemented during the fallout over convicted sexual predator Harvey Weinstein.<\/p>\n<p>Will Smith issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2022\/03\/28\/will-smith-publicly-apologizes-to-chris-rock-unacceptable-and-inexcusable-behavior\/\">Instagram apology <\/a>on Monday, calling his behavior \u201cinexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.
