The campaign may be considered a bold claim, given the last leftist government in Hungary collapsed over the leaking of scandalous tapes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2006\/sep\/18\/1\">Prime Minister admitting he had constantly lied to the Hungarian people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/magyarnemzet.hu\/belfold\/2022\/03\/alapjogokert-kozpont-az-aktiv-magyarok-58-szazaleka-orban-viktort-tamogatja\">report<\/a> by<em> Magyar Nemzet<\/em>, it appears that the smear tactics in this election campaign are not bearing much fruit, with the current Prime Minister remaining popular with voters, his support ranging between 52 and 58 per cent in polls over the last 18 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the leftist leader of the country\u2019s opposition,\u00a0P\u00e9ter M\u00e1rki-Zay, has not fared nearly as well, with support for the Prime Ministerial candidate failing to ever breach 29 per cent support amongst voters, and is currently floating around 25 per cent \u2014 again assuming accurate polling.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hungarian Govt on Ukraine: \u2018We Must Not Let the Left Drag Hungary Into This War\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yB8bFWo0uj\">https:\/\/t.co\/yB8bFWo0uj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1496862492722565121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While initially centred around the issues of democracy, immigration, and leftist values seeping in from the Western world, the Hungarian election campaign has since shifted significantly as a result of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a major element of contention is whether or not Hungary should get involved in the conflict, and in what way, with Fidesz and the United for Hungary rainbow coalition having radically different conceptions of the country\u2019s place in the world order.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n and his party have remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/24\/hungarian-govt-on-ukraine-we-must-not-let-the-left-drag-hungary-into-this-war\/\">adamant<\/a> that Hungary should stay out of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, denouncing alleged attempts from the left to \u201cdrag\u201d the nation into the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungary must stay out of an armed conflict,\u201d Orb\u00e1n has previously said. \u201cThe [Hungarian] left-wing\u2019s proposal to send [Hungarian] soldiers and weapons to Ukraine is therefore hugely irresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must not let the Left drag Hungary into this war!\u201d he continued, noting that the country\u2019s own security is its \u201cmost important interest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Orban\u2019s opposition has accused him of serving Russia in his refusal to let Hungary get involved in a foreign war.\u00a0M\u00e1rki-Zay has said Orb\u00e1n is parrotting Russian talking points, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=507067450779732&#038;id=100044294431020\">saying<\/a> that the current PM is on the \u201cdark side\u201d of history.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1rki-Zay has, <a href=\"https:\/\/magyarnemzet.hu\/belfold\/2022\/03\/szijjarto-peter-marki-zay-es-az-ukran-elnok-megegyezett-hogy-fegyvereket-kapjon-ukrajna\">according<\/a> to\u00a0<em>Magyar Nemzet<\/em>, reportedly already agreed with Ukraine that Hungary will send weapons should he be elected to the position of Prime Minister, in contrast to the current administration, which has actively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/hungary-foreign-minister-peter-szijjarto-weapon-transit-ukraine\/\">blocked<\/a> arms so much as transiting through the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few hundred kilometers from our borders, people are fighting for their freedom in front of their aggressive friend, who is bombing hospitals, schools, nuclear power plants,\u201d the opposition candidate wrote online. \u201cAnd it is still the most important thing for you to lie about the opposition and echo Putin\u2019s propaganda. Shame!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201d The bet is clear: you and Putin or the West and Europe?
