In other words, the state of the union is an expensive, drug-addicted nation in decline. <\/p>\n<p>According to findings from a new Salary Finance survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/30\/1-in-5-american-workers-runs-out-of-money-before-payday-survey-finds-.html\">reported<\/a> by CNBC Wednesday, 1 in 5 workers is running out of money between paychecks. Estimates from Bloomberg Economics predict U.S. households will spend another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-29\/u-s-households-face-5-200-inflation-tax-this-year-chart\">$5,200<\/a>, or $433 a month, for the same basket of goods as last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe excess savings built up over the pandemic, and increases in wages, will cushion those costs, and allow spending to expand at a decent pace this year,\u201d Bloomberg reported. \u201cBut accelerated depletion of savings will increase the urgency for those staying on the sidelines to join the labor force, and the resulting increase in labor supply will likely dampen wage growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With eligible tax-paying adults receiving a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/en\/2022\/03\/17\/latest_news\/1647514558_032514.html\">maximum of $3,200<\/a> in direct stimulus checks since March 2020, however, no Americans are immune to the inflation machine fed by the government\u2019s cash payments and excessive unemployment benefits which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/19\/joe-biden-administration-pandemic-unemployment-bonus-expiration-janet-yellen-marty-walsh\/\">lasted<\/a> through last summer. <\/p>\n<p>For some Americans trying to cope with the stress of rising prices, drugs have become an appealing pipeline to an alternative reality from Biden\u2019s crises. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/positive-drug-tests-among-u-s-workers-hit-two-decade-high-11648603800\">According<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, positive drug tests among American workers reached a two-decade high despite many employers suspending tests in light of nationwide labor shortages. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proportion of U.S. workers who tested positive for the various drugs Quest [Diagnostics Inc.] screened for in 2021 rose to 4.6%, the highest level since 2001, according to Quest, which analyzed nearly nine million overall urine tests last year on behalf of employers,\u201d the paper reported. \u201cThat percentage is more than 31% higher than the low of 3.5% a decade ago, in the early days of a resurgent heroin epidemic in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spike in drug use coincides with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/22\/health\/alcohol-deaths-covid.html\">25 percent<\/a> spike in alcohol-related deaths during the pandemic, rising from nearly 79,000 in 2019 to more than 99,000 in 2020. In November, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/drug-overdose-data.htm\">reported<\/a> deaths from opioids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2021\/20211117.htm\">rose<\/a> almost 30 percent in the 12-month period ending April 2021, surpassing 100,000 for a new record. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the introduction of a novel virus <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/03\/living-with-the-virus-requires-confronting-obesity\/\">disproportionately killing<\/a> obese people, Americans aren\u2019t eating healthier either. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/01\/our-failure-to-grapple-with-the-obesity-epidemic-pumps-diabetes-crisis-to-new-heights\/\">Diabetes joined opioids<\/a> to eclipse a six-figure death total in both 2020 and 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/obesity-overweight.htm\">According<\/a> to the latest CDC data, less than 30 percent of Americans are reported to be at a metabolically healthy weight, with more than 42 percent considered medically obese. <\/p>\n<p>Given the deterioration of personal finances and baseline health, it should be no surprise that a declining number of Americans claim to be \u201cthriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallup <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/391331\/life-ratings-drop-month-low.aspx\">reported<\/a> Wednesday that life satisfaction ratings have reached a 13-month low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe percentage of Americans who evaluate their lives well enough to be considered \u2018thriving\u2019 on Gallup\u2019s Live Evaluation Index was 53.2% in February, the lowest since January 2021,\u201d the survey firm found. \u201cSince reaching the 14-year high mark of 59.2% in June, the thriving rate has declined six percentage points.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
