The box was sitting in a detached garage in a Cincinnati suburb when the neighbor discovered them and called police.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The man who discovered the <\/span><span>bones <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlwt.com\/article\/cincinnati-box-of-bones-found-mount-healthy\/39537364\"><span>reportedly<\/span><\/a><span> heard children near a neighbor\u2019s garage and went to check out what was going on. \u201c<\/span><span>The concerned resident responded to the area the voices were heard to conduct a precautionary safety check,\u201d the Mt. Healthy Police Department said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mthealthy.pd\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cAfter entering the garage, the resident observed a box which appeared to contain decomposed human remains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the more bizarre cases in my 40-plus year history that we\u2019ve ever stumbled across,\u201d Mt. Healthy Police Chief Vincent Demasi told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlwt.com\/article\/cincinnati-box-of-bones-found-mount-healthy\/39537364#\"><span>WLWT<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Police believe the bones could be over a century old after they discovered that the human remains once belonged to a fraternal group called the \u201cIndependent Order of Odd Fellows\u201d who considered the remains \u201crelics.\u201d The group was founded in 1819 and reportedly had \u201ca large following\u201d according to police.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Odd Fellows once met in the garage where the remains were found. Police reported that when the current owner of the garage moved in, he didn\u2019t clean everything out but \u201c<\/span><span>stored material contained therein, including the box with human remains, in the garage he purchased here in Mt. Healthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What\u2019s even more bizarre is that investigators revealed that over 100 years ago, Ohio prisons would sell the unclaimed dead bodies of prisoners to the public. <\/span><span>\u201cMy understanding is back in the late 1800s, early 1900s, that it was not unusual for unclaimed cadavers to be able to be purchased for various uses,\u201d Demasi explained. Police believe this is how the \u201cOdd Fellows\u201d ended up with the remains, which they would use for rituals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Independent Order of Odd Fellows no longer holds meetings in Mt. Healthy, but the group still exists. According to its website, the Odd Fellows has been around since at least the 1700s in England, but the North American group was founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey and four others when they started Washington Lodge No. 1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/odd-fellows.org\/about\/odd-fellows\/\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>, the group claims to be \u201cone of the oldest and largest fraternities in the world.\u201d \u201c<\/span><span>We are non-political and non-sectarian,\u201d the website states. \u201cMembership is open to all regardless of sex, race, religion, political affiliation and social status -all bound by the desire to improve ourselves and the calling to live and promote the principles of <\/span><b>Friendship<\/b><span>, <\/span><b>Love,<\/b><span> and <\/span><b>Truth<\/b><span> which transcends labels\u201d (emphasis original).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the Odd Fellows lists a number of activities and projects it partakes in, it does not mention any rituals involving dead bodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Hamilton County Coroner\u2019s Office is examining the human bones to see if it can identify them but nothing further has been discovered about who they belong to or exactly how old they are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
