Indeed, Ukraine has not been shy in putting political pressure on foreign governments, singling out nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10658965\/Zelensky-praises-Boris-helping-Western-leaders.html\">regarding their support \u2014 or perceived lack thereof<\/a> \u2014 of the country\u2019s military efforts against Vladimir Putin\u2019s Russia.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">German officials warn those who publicly express their &#8220;approval&#8221; of Russia&#8217;s war efforts should expect to be put under criminal investigation, and the public display of the &#8216;Z&#8217; symbol could be considered a &#8220;disturbance of the peace&#8221; and a criminal offence <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/207PQlLoMf\">https:\/\/t.co\/207PQlLoMf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1508373635622387714?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>While many nations in the western world presently have no rules against the display of the Russian \u2018Z\u2019 symbol, others have proactively rendered pro-Russian use of the letter illegal before Ukrainian officials publicly pressured them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>One of these nations is anti-free speech Germany, with authorities having already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/28\/free-speech-clampdown-german-states-criminalise-z-symbol-used-by-russia-supporters\/\">threatened<\/a> that anyone who displays the \u2018Z\u2019 could face up to three years in prison.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The ban was initially announced by authorities in a number of federal states across the country, before the nation\u2019s Federal Ministry of the Interior <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BMI_Bund\/status\/1508443796802965504\">announced<\/a> that anyone who dares express a pro-Russian viewpoint \u2014 including via the display of the \u2018Z\u2019 \u2014 would be opening themselves up to criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian war of aggression against the #Ukraine is a criminal offense,\u201d the ministry wrote online. \u201cAnyone who publicly approves of this war of aggression may be liable to prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis also applies to showing the \u2018Z\u2019 symbol,\u201d the ministry continued. \u201cFederal safety agencies are eyeing the use of the symbol.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"de\" dir=\"ltr\">Der russische Angriffskrieg gegen die <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ukraine?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ukraine<\/a> ist eine Straftat. Die Sicherheitsbeh\u00f6rden des Bundes haben die Verwendung des Symbols im Blick.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bundesministerium des Innern und f\u00fcr Heimat (@BMI_Bund) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BMI_Bund\/status\/1508443796802965504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite German authorities announcing further restrictions on free speech in the country, German-speaking netizens do not seem to be all that perturbed by their state\u2019s threats, instead mocking the crackdown on social media by sharing images of totally innocuous uses of the letter with the official account operated by the Federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I still drive my car?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Steve_Stargate\/status\/1508457202578858000\">asked<\/a> one user of the ministry, posting an image of what appears to be a z-like badge on a vehicle, while others\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BuengerMichael\/status\/1508482683621548038\">posted<\/a> images and gifs of Zorro, a fictional character famous for using his sword to slash \u2018Z\u2019 symbols into various objects.<\/p>\n<p>One company however that is taking the matter quite seriously, though, is Swiss-based Zurich Insurance, which has announced that it will be discontinuing the use of its logo over its similarity with the Russian \u201cZ\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A white Z on a blue background, the company now seems to fear that it is too similar to the white \u201cZ\u201d commonly used by the Russian army, and so have decided to cease its use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are temporarily removing the use of the letter \u2018Z\u2019 from social channels where it appears in isolation and could be misinterpreted,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10656865\/Zurich-Insurance-axes-famous-Z-logo-letter-Russian-pro-war-symbol.html\">reported<\/a> the insurance company as saying in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re monitoring the situation closely and will take further actions if and when required,\u201d the company\u2019s statement continued. \u201cThe Zurich brand has been around for 150 years.
