Walker stating that the public health emergency \u201cremains in effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am hereby extending the \u2018covered period\u2019 designated on January 4, 2021 \u2026 until May 14, 2022,\u201d Pelosi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/32822-0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a \u201cDear Colleague\u201d letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of\u00a0being present\u00a0on the floor, members can continue to submit their votes on legislation and other matters through designated\u00a0colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the Senate has required in-person votes throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the House on both sides of the aisle have repeatedly\u00a0taken advantage of proxy\u00a0voting since it was introduced in May 2020\u00a0in order to\u00a0handle other\u00a0business while serving in\u00a0Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) requested to vote by proxy in order to file paperwork\u00a0to run for mayor of Los Angeles,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2022-02-16\/house-proxy-voting\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the LA Times.<\/a>\u00a0Bass submitted her intent to vote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/legislative\/proxy-letters\/117\/2\/20220207\/Bass-CA37-20220207-07.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by proxy two days before<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/republican-members-leader.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and GOP members previously sued House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for authorizing proxy voting.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Drew Angerer\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who has frequently voted by\u00a0proxy, used\u00a0the practice in order to conduct a video interview in his car with the Philadelphia Inquirer, according to the same outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a long vote series today, so I got to step out of the Capitol and I\u2019m excited about having this conversation,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/inquirer-live\/ro-khanna-dignity-in-a-digital-age-20220124.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said\u00a0<\/a>in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MoBrooks\/status\/1491240718811406342\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly\u00a0<\/a>submitted a proxy vote\u00a0in order to\u00a0return to his home state for\u00a0a Senate campaign event.<\/p>\n<p>Even House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EliseStefanik\/status\/1481279437337468929\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voted via proxy earlier this year<\/a>, on the same day she appeared with former President Donald Trump for a fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/bill-johnson-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/bill-johnson-01.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. Bill Johnson argued the coronavirus isn\u2019t a valid excuse to continue proxy voting.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">House Television via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Currently, there are 43 active letters of intent to use proxy voting\u00a0<strong>in\u00a0<\/strong>the House.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/ProxyLetter#ActiveProxies\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The oldest one was submitted\u00a0<\/a>by Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) echoed the minority leader\u2019s criticism on Twitter, saying Democrats were \u201cabusing\u201d the practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNancy Pelosi can do what she wants- she\u2019s the Speaker. But let\u2019s no longer pretend that Covid is the reason for continued proxy voting. Democrats are abusing it, and it should end\u2026and it will next year,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBillJohnson\/status\/1508800292409810961\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>If Republicans do take back the House in this fall\u2019s midterm elections, McCarthy has vowed to eliminate proxy voting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur very first day is rules,\u201d he recently told Punchbowl News. \u201cWe\u2019re no longer going to do proxy voting.
