Gavin Newsom and fellow Democrats last year to justify legislation requiring high school students across the state to complete an \u201cethnic studies\u201d curriculum have been exposed as inconclusive at best.<\/p>\n<p>According to a news release, analysis by statisticians\u00a0Richard Sander of the University of California Los Angeles and Abraham Wyner of the University of\u00a0Pennsylvania revealed \u201d that the beneficial claims [for ethnic studies] are wholly unsupported by the evidence. The\u00a0data, they say, could just as easily be argued to show a harmful effect from the course as a<br \/>beneficial effect \u2013 but the soundest scientific conclusion is that the two original studies show\u00a0nothing at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The ethnic studies curriculum generated a great deal of controversy, including over claims of antisemitism, and reports that the curriculum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/\">suggested<\/a> students learn about radical left-wing Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). Gov. Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/AB-101-Signing-Message-PDF.pdf\">claimed<\/a> last year, in signing Assembly Bill 101 to mandate the ethnic studies curriculum, that \u201ca number of studies have shown that these courses boost student achievement over the long run \u2014 especially among students of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as Sander and Wyner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/studies-fail-to-support-claims-new-california-ethnic-studies-requirement\">reported<\/a> in the online Tablet magazine Monday, the \u201cstudies\u201d to which he referred did not show that at all (original emphasis):<\/p>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto text-article-dropcaps\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The studies\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3102\/0002831216677002\">one from 2017<\/a>\u00a0by Thomas Dee of Stanford University and Emily Penner of University of California, Irvine, the other a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2026386118\">follow-up from 2021<\/a>\u00a0by Dee, Penner, and Sade Bonilla of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst\u2014purport to show that ninth-grade students who took an ethnic studies course in San Francisco public schools experienced dramatic short-term and long-term academic benefits. The studies also make the stunning claim that the ethnic studies course causes an average increase of 1.4 GPA points, miraculously turning C students into B+ students.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>But the experiment on which these conclusions are based is so muddled, and the data reported is so ambiguous, that in fact\u00a0<em>they support no conclusion, either positive or negative, about the effects of this particular ethnic studies course in these particular schools and times<\/em>. Indeed, not even the lead author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/2021\/research-finds-ethnic-studies-in-san-francisco-had-enduring-impact\/660856\">claims<\/a>\u00a0that the studies provide a basis for establishing ethnic studies mandates for all students.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sander and Wyner point out several specific problems with the studies\u2019 methodology, such as failing to distinguish between students who were eligible to enroll in an experimental ethnic studies courses, and those who actually chose to do so. They add that the authors of the studies have declined to share their raw data. They also note that the studies are being used to support an ethnic studies requirement at University of California campuses.<\/p>\n<p>In their press release, they conclude\u00a0that \u201cthe publication of these two astoundingly shoddy works and their importance to the ethnic studies movement should raise the alarm \u2013 not only that the editing and peer-review process at [the two journals that published the articles] needs overhauling, but that California parents are not being told the truth about a potentially significant change in the education of their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
