Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said during an interview this week that Democrats need to be concerned about not only losing independent voters in the upcoming midterms but also losing the base of the Democrat Party.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks in an <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2022\/03\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-i-was-right-about-joe-manchin.html\">interview<\/a> with New York Magazine. The discussion included AOC\u2019s claims that \u201csenior members of Congress, who have been around in different political times\u201d want to work in a \u201cbuddy-buddy and backslapping\u201d political system where \u201cwe\u2019ll cut a deal and go into a room with some bourbon and some smoke and you\u2019ll come out and work something out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a real nostalgia and belief that that time still exists or that we can get back to that,\u201d she claimed. \u201cWe need to acknowledge that this isn\u2019t just about middle of the road, an increasingly narrow band of independent voters. This is really about the collapse of support among young people, among the Democratic base, who are feeling that they worked overtime to get this president elected and aren\u2019t necessarily being seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez said that Biden, who is facing <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/599910-biden-approval-rating-falls-to-record-low-in-nbc-news-poll\">horrific<\/a> polling numbers, needed to pursue an even more far-left agenda to fire up the party\u2019s base:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>But those days, she says, have been over for a long time. And the fact that Biden and others don\u2019t realize it, she says, could spell disaster in the fall\u2019s elections. With Biden\u2019s low approval numbers and the historic tendency of the president\u2019s party to lose, on average, 26 House seats in the midterms, the Democrats face an uphill battle to keep control of Congress \u2014 a situation that requires firing up the party\u2019s progressive base, Ocasio-Cortez said. \u2026 Ocasio-Cortez and the other 97 members of the House Progressive Caucus are calling on Biden to issue executive orders to enact environmental protections, lower health-care costs, cancel federal student-loan debts, and expand protections for immigrants.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf the president does pursue and start to govern decisively using executive action and other tools at his disposal, I think we\u2019re in the game,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if we decide to just kind of sit back for the rest of the year and not change people\u2019s lives \u2014 yeah, I do think we\u2019re in trouble. So I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s set in stone.
