Lindsey Graham (R-SC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/04\/ted-cruz-rebukes-lindsey-graham-exceptionally-bad-idea-to-assassinate-putin\/\">already under fire from all sides<\/a> for his bellicose statements on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, has now risked angering conservative voters across the country by backing a bill\u00a0that would give legal sanction to collusion between Big Media and Big Tech, empowering corporate media giants like CNN and the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0at the expense of independent creators.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, called the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), does the opposite of what it promises: it protects discredited media companies from competition by allowing them to form a legal cartel to collectively bargain with Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_18067466\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/09\/Mark-Zuckerberg-surrounded-by-guards.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Zuckerberg surrounded by guards ( Chip Somodevilla \/Getty)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_18140378\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AP_19343140727579.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18140378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AP_19343140727579.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by: John Nacion\/STAR MAX\/IPx 2019 12\/8\/19 Jeff Zucker at CNN Heroes at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by: John Nacion\/STAR MAX\/IPx 2019 12\/8\/19 Jeff Zucker at CNN Heroes at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If the bill passes, big media companies would be able to strike deals with Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other tech giants that would prioritize their content to the detriment of podcasters, YouTubers, Substack authors, and other forms of independent media.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The corporate media is highly unpopular with Republican voters. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/08\/30\/partisan-divides-in-media-trust-widen-driven-by-a-decline-among-republicans\/\">According to Pew<\/a>, just 35 percent of Republicans say they have \u201ca lot\u201d or \u201csome\u201d trust in national news organizations, compared to 78 percent of Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Republican politicians regularly criticize the liberal media for its bias. Yet Sen. Graham, as well as a number of other Republican senators including Sens. Cynthia Lummis, Susan Collins, Rand Paul, and John Kennedy, are now backing a bill that would give big news corporations an unfair advantage over their competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Graham\u2019s co-sponsorship of the bill earlier this month comes at a time when the South Carolina senator is facing across-the-aisle accusations of recklessness, including from his own Republican colleagues, for his bellicose statements on Russia. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/04\/ted-cruz-rebukes-lindsey-graham-exceptionally-bad-idea-to-assassinate-putin\/\">recently rebuked Graham<\/a> after the latter called for the assassination of Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Graham did receive support from one Republican politician\u00a0\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2022\/03\/04\/adam-kinzinger-agrees-lindsey-graham-wanting-putins-assassination\/\">notorious Trump-hater Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL)<\/a>, the only Republican other than Rep. Liz Cheney on the Jan 6th committee.<\/p>\n<p>By backing the JCPA, Sen. Graham also finds himself on the opposite side of Republican leaders in the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>GOP leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has called the JCPA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/01\/exclusive-kevin-mccarthy-slams-establishment-media-pushed-journalism-act-antithesis-of-conservatism\/\">\u201cthe antithesis of conservatism,\u201d<\/a> while Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has warned it would give the media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/03\/12\/jim-jordan-democrat-bill-would-grant-media-cartel-power\/\">\u201ccartel power.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) also oppose the bill. Rubio has warned it would deepen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/25\/exclusive-rubio-opposes-media-cartel-bill-opens-the-door-to-greater-collusion-between-big-media-and-big-tech\/\">\u201ccollusion between Big Media and Big Tech,\u201d<\/a> while Blackburn has said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/11\/exclusive-marsha-blackburn-opposes-establishment-media-cartel-plan-will-make-it-even-easier-for-big-tech-to-censor-conservative-voices\/\">empower Big Tech\u2019s censors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Republican FCC commissioner Nathan Simington has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/05\/17\/recipe-for-mischief-fcc-commissioner-president-trumps-big-tech-expert-slam-jcpa\/\">warned<\/a> that the bill would empower national media monopolies at the expense of local journalism.<\/p>\n<p>The JCPA would give big media special legal privileges enjoyed by no other industry.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that tech companies have disrupted virtually every major industry over the past decade, from high street retail stores to taxi services, Big Media has used its megaphone to create the impression that they face a unique peril from Big Tech and therefore deserve special government protections \u2014 even though tech companies have consistently rigged their platforms to favor the establishment media.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Big Tech companies are directly funding the establishment media \u2014 both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2018\/07\/10\/youtube-to-fund-handpicked-authoritative-news-sources-and-push-them-on-users\/\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/07\/20\/report-facebook-is-paying-massive-licensing-fees-to-media-titans\/\">Facebook<\/a> are paying hundreds of millions of dollars to the largest and wealthiest media companies, despite the fact that they are far less trusted than independent journalists and podcasters.<\/p>\n<p>Big Tech favors the establishment media in its algorithms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2019\/01\/16\/google-youtube-search-blacklist-smoking-gun\/\">boosting handpicked sources<\/a> in search results and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/10\/27\/election-interference-google-suppresses-breitbart-news-in-search-even-with-exact-headline\/\">suppressing independent media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Big Tech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2022\/01\/05\/twitter-bans-popular-british-news-aggregator-politics-for-all\/\">bans<\/a> the establishment media\u2019s competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Big Tech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/06\/05\/fact-check-hoax-facebook-relies-on-usa-today-intern-to-redefine-the-word-amnesty-for-breitbart\/\">elevates establishment media to the status of \u201cfact checkers,\u201d<\/a> allowing them to suppress their competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Notoriously, CNN\u2019s ratings are boosted by the large number of deals the network has to continuously broadcast in airports, hotel lobbies, and other public venues.<\/p>\n<p>Favoritism by Big Tech has a similar effect, forcing establishment media content into the news feeds and search results of a public that no longer trusts the industry. Even if ignored, the media\u2019s content is still seen, boosting the numbers and satisfying advertisers and business partners.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these advantages, the establishment media wants even more from Big Tech. With public trust in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/07\/americans-trust-media-record-low\/\">media near all-time lows,<\/a>\u00a0a genuine free market of information sources on major tech platforms would likely result in establishment media outlets like CNN being eclipsed by newer and more trusted competitors.<\/p>\n<p>At a hearing about the House\u2019s version of the bill last year, independent journalist Glenn Greenwald warned that the JCPA empowers media titans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do absolutely believe that the problem of Silicon Valley monopolistic power and its ability to interfere in our politics and impede a free press is a very serious one,\u201d said Greenwald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut oftentimes it\u2019s the media itself, it\u2019s journalists themselves who are demanding that that power be exercised in a censorious way in a way that undermines a free and diverse press.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a leading advocacy organization promoting online freedom, the JCPA will empower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/03\/19\/electronic-frontier-foundation-jcpa-favors-media-near-monopolies\/\">\u201cmedia near-monopolies,\u201d<\/a> and does nothing to curb the monopoly power of Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Allum Bokhari is the senior technology correspondent at Breitbart News.\u00a0He is the author of\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/DELETED-Techs-Battle-Movement-Election\/dp\/154605930X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">#DELETED: Big Tech\u2019s Battle to Erase the Trump Movement and Steal The Election.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
